CAINTA, RIZAL โ Amid growing demands to protect instructional time under the three-term academic calendar, DepEd CALABARZON, through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD), eyes a school-embedded Campus Journalism Learning Pathway (CJLP) that seeks to transform the journalistic events, such as the Reconfigured Regional Schools Press Conference (RRSPC) from a training-dependent event into a competency-based learning continuum for student journalists.
Contained in a concept paper currently being reviewed by internal and external stakeholders, the proposed CJLP seeks to institutionalize a structured, competency-based learning pathway that develops journalism skills within regular school publication activities and classroom instruction, reducing reliance on centralized training camps and extended regional activities.
The proposal emerged in response to challenges brought about by the three-term academic calendar, where prolonged training programs and off-campus activities often compete with instructional time. It also aims to address disparities in access to journalism development opportunities between Special Program in Journalism (SPJ) schools and non-SPJ schools by providing a common framework for learner-journalists across the region.
Under the proposed framework, learners will progress through a series of developmental phases beginning with foundational journalism competencies at the school level, followed by division-level validation through the Schools Press Conference, before advancing to regional assessment and national-level preparation. The RRSPC, meanwhile, would serve as the culminating competency-based assessment rather than a training-centered competition, marking a significant shift in the regionโs approach to campus journalism development.
