SSU Engages in Smart City and Sustainability Exposure Visit in Bangkok, Thailand

Samar State University (SSU), through its participation in the Eastern Visayas Consortium for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (EVCIEERD), took part in an International Collaboration and Regional Exposure Visit on Smart Cities and Sustainable Communities held at the Asian Institute of Technology from March 15 to 21, 2026. The delegation, composed of university presidents and government representatives from Eastern Visayas, engaged in a week-long learning program designed to strengthen international collaboration, research partnerships, and innovation capacity. The visit highlighted Thailand’s best practices in smart city development, sustainability, and community-based innovation.

Representing SSU in this international engagement were Dr. Felisa E. Gomba, Vice President for Research and Extension Services, and Dr. Sherrie Ann C. Labid, Executive Director for Research. Their participation underscored SSU’s commitment to advancing research collaboration, strengthening institutional partnerships, and expanding global engagement in support of innovation and sustainable development initiatives.

A key highlight of the program was the opening ceremony and Memorandum of Agreement signing between AIT and EVCIEERD member agencies, which reaffirmed commitments to academic cooperation, research collaboration, and faculty exchange. Participants gained valuable insights into how sustainability is most effective when embedded in institutional culture and daily operations, and how smart campuses depend not merely on technology, but on its strategic application to address real societal needs. The engagement further emphasized the critical role of collaboration in advancing innovation, research, and sustainable development across institutions.

Institutional visits provided deeper exposure to Thailand’s development models. At the Community Organization Development Institute and Chulalongkorn University, participants examined people-centered development approaches, community ownership mechanisms, and behavior-driven sustainability practices, including zero-waste initiatives. Visits to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration showcased AI-driven traffic management systems that enhance mobility and reduce congestion, while True Digital Park demonstrated a dynamic innovation ecosystem connecting startups, investors, and corporations. The delegation also explored the role of the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) in coordinating Thailand’s smart city framework.

Overall, the visit provided meaningful insights into sustainability integration, smart governance, innovation ecosystems, and community-driven development. It likewise underscored the importance of strong institutional leadership, standardized frameworks, and cross-sector collaboration in advancing smart city initiatives. The experience further strengthened SSU’s commitment to international partnerships and the application of Thailand’s best practices in advancing research, innovation, and sustainable development in its community and Eastern Visayas.
