[CAFS-IPB ASL ENGAGEMENTS]

Ms. Marynold Purificacion (Biochem-ASL, IPB, CAFS) and Dr. Leila Africa (NPPD, IHNF, CHE) attended the Food Composition Workshop: Development of Good Quality Food Composition Database last 18-20 November 2024 at The Quarter Hualamphong by UHG, Bangkok, Thailand.

The said event was organized by the Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University (INMU), and funded by the Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI). The workshop emphasized the importance of data quality, standardization, and documentation to ensure the reliability and comparability of food composition data across different regions and studies. It also encouraged the application of food composition databases in food policy, research, and the food industry to support evidence-based decision-making for nutrition and health.

Biochem-ASL welcomes 11 student interns from the Institute of Chemistry (BS Agricultural Chemistry), Institute of Biological Sciences (BS Biology), and Institute of Crop Science (BS Agricultural Biotechnology). During their 5-week internship, they will be immersed in various laboratory techniques such as food and soil analyses, molecular biology, and nanotechnology.

[CAFS-IPB ASL ENGAGEMENTS]

Dr. Anna Karen Laserna and Mr. Dalton Fortin visited the Biochem-ASL last 25 June 2024 to discuss possible research collaborations on corn metabolomics.

Dr. Laserna is a DOST-PCHRD Balik Scientist awardee and an Academic Service Faculty at DLSU Central Instrumentation Facility, while Mr. Fortun is a PhD Chemistry Fellow who will work on metabolomics of traditional pigmented corn for health and nutrition.

[CAFS-IPB ASL ENGAGEMENTS]

Biochem-ASL staff attended the 1st Philippine Metabolomics Colloquium last 21 June at the College of Science Auditorium, UP Diliman. The said event was organized by the Philippine Genome Center's Protein, Proteomics, and Metabolomics Facility.

Metabolomics experts from Ghent University, KU Leuven and Helmholtz Zentrum München discussed how to navigate the molecular landscape of health and disease from metabolomics data to biological insights. Researchers from PGC's PPMF, Marine Science Institute, Institute of Chemistry - UP Diliman, and DLSU Central Instrumentation Facility also discussed their current projects on metabolomics.
