STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF THE ONGOING TALKS BETWEEN THE UP ADMINISTRATION AND THE DND
04 February 2021

The principle of academic freedom lies at the cornerstone of any functioning democracy. The right to study, to explore, and to teach without sanction only improves the condition of man. We have nothing to fear from an independent academe that only seeks to expand the breadth of human achievement.

In this light, the Upsilon Sigma Phi strongly supports the ongoing dialogue between the University of the Philippines, under President Danilo Concepcion ‘89, and the Department of National Defense in pursuit of a mutually satisfactory resolution to the matter. When there is still recourse to peaceful actions and civil dialogue, those should always be preferred.

As a fraternity which considers diversity as one of its core strengths, the Upsilon Sigma Phi only welcomes these developments. Although coming from diverse backgrounds, Upsilonians remain steadfast to the ultimate guiding principle of our alma mater— the freedom of speech and expression. After all, there is no fraternity if there is no university. Upsilonians are enjoined to actively participate in seeking a lasting solution to the present crisis.

UPLB led by its Student Council staged a protest against the government's (DOJ) plan to release the convicted rapist-murderer and former Calauan, Laguna, Mayor Antonio Sanchez ahead of its seven (7) terms of reclusion perpetua (40 years per term).

JICA supports LRT-1’s 11.7-kilometer extension to Cavite To address transport demand and ease traffic congestion in and around Metro Manila, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has expressed its support to the upcoming construction of the Light Rail Transit-Line 1 (LRT-1) South Extension (Cavite) Project.

USPLBAA is a proud sponsor of the theatrical production of “Macario Sakay: Kilabot ng Sierra Madre”.

The play tells the story of the unsung hero, Macario Sakay, who fought against the American Colonialism.

Written by Fellow Efren Yambot '60, directed by Fellow Alexander Cortez '67 and presented by Upsilon Sigma Phi in partnership with the University of the Philippines Los Baños, Department of Social Sciences, under Department Chair Dwight Diestro. Music is by Krina Cayabyab, and choreography by Dingdong Selga.

The play also features Maestro Ryan Cayabyab’s “O Bayan Ko”.
