The national government’s debt hit a new record of P18.49 trillion at end‑March -up nearly 2% from February and marking the sixth consecutive monthly increase. Our currency depreciation pushed up the peso value of foreign obligations, bringing the debt stock to about 97% of the Marcos administration’s P19.06‑trillion ceiling for 2026. The government is set to borrow a further P2.68 trillion this year. 😫📉💵

Hey Future Business Leaders! 👋
The Philippine national debt has hit a new record high, reaching ₱18.49 trillion at the end of March.
A significant factor behind this surge is the "valuation effect." Because a portion of our national debt is denominated in foreign currencies, a weaker peso automatically increases the amount we owe in peso terms even without taking on new loans. With the peso recently breaching the ₱60-to-the-dollar mark, the cost of servicing these obligations continues to climb.
While economists suggest the debt remains manageable for now, the room for error is shrinking as global uncertainties and high interest rates persist.
