RIHSD in collaboration with College of Social Sciences and Development (CSSD) faculty explore through university funded research the struggles of select LGBTQIA+ college students prior to their entry at the University titled, 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐜 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐲 𝐋𝐆𝐁𝐓𝐐𝐈𝐀+ 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬: 𝐀 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡. This research significantly recognizes the struggles of LGBTQIA+ in the society. It also helps understand these struggles and opens discussion on the topic of bullying, homophobia, and transphobia.

This university funded research is part of the inclusive community towards nation-building with the PUP's guiding principle: 𝑇𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑙𝑎𝑤 𝑛𝑔 𝐵𝑎𝑦𝑎𝑛, 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑎 𝑠𝑎 𝐵𝑎𝑦𝑎𝑛.

On Cultural Heritage Month, we recognize the efforts to conserve, restore, and preserve our cultural heritage—whether tangible or intangible. These efforts would not be possible without the workforce behind the projects and advocacies that sustain them. We celebrate every woman who takes part in keeping our heritage alive and thriving. These contributions were highlighted in 2025 University-funded research project 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐚 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫.

This research also highlights the invaluable contributions of women workers in heritage conservation efforts, emphasizing their role in safeguarding cultural identity and history for future generations. Furthermore, the study calls for better compensation and safer workplaces for all cultural heritage workers. It opens discussions on the importance of creating decent and inclusive working conditions as part of building an inclusive community toward nation-building.

In its continuing commitment to ensure that research extends beyond academic boundaries and reaches its intended beneficiaries, the Research Institute for Human and Social Development (RIHSD) conducted a series of field visits, last April 23, 2026, to selected barangays near PUP Manila. This initiative underscores the University’s mission of translating knowledge into meaningful community impact, anchored on the guiding principle: “𝑔𝑎𝑔𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑔 𝑘𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑛𝑢𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑛 𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎 𝑠𝑎’𝑦𝑜 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎 𝑠𝑎 𝑏𝑎𝑦𝑎𝑛.”

The activity involved visits to B𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐲 𝟓𝟖𝟕, 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐲 𝟓𝟗𝟐, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐲 𝟔𝟐𝟗 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐥𝐚, all of which served as research sites for studies conducted in 2025. The purpose of the visit was to present key findings, share research notes, and engage barangay officials in a short but meaningful discussion of results and recommendations.

Two major research projects were highlighted during the dissemination:

These studies offer valuable insights into local governance, gender-responsive mechanisms in complaint systems, and innovative approaches to community-based economic development. By directly sharing these findings with barangay officials, RIHSD ensures that research outputs are not only documented but also utilized in shaping policies and practices at the grassroots level.

Leading the dissemination activity were Chief Diosdado P. Franco of the Center for Community and Development Studies, Asst. Prof. Richmond Keith N. Simeon, Chairperson of the Department of Economics, and Ch. Celso G. Tan Jr. of the Center for Economics and Business Studies. Their presence facilitated productive dialogue with local stakeholders, strengthening collaboration between the University and the communities it serves. This effort reinforces the role of RIHSD as both a generator of knowledge and a catalyst for community empowerment, ensuring that 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬, 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬.

Kapadyak, Kasinta is a research initiative of the RIHSD-Center for Labor and Industrial Relations Studies (RIHSD-CLIRS) in collaboration with 350 Pilipinas and the PUP College of Architecture, Design, and the Built Environment that advocates for the promotion of decent work (SDG 8) while aspiring for sustainable and green transportation, poverty alleviation, and the formalization of labor within the PUP community. This also helps inform policymakers and contribute to sustainable transportation planning.

The collaboration with 350 Pilipinas is essential, as it guides the research project in aligning with a mission to create a secure and promising future by empowering individuals and communities, fostering justice, prosperity, and equality, and ensuring a climate-safe environment.

This research strengthens the RIHSD's commitment to research that matters in inclusive community in line with the Sintang Paaralan’s guiding principle, Mula Sa ’Yo, Para sa Bayan.

𝐀𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭:
This study serves as a baseline investigation into the socio-economic conditions and operational challenges faced by pedicab drivers and operators surrounding the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sta. Mesa, Manila. In 2020, a demographic profiling study on the members of PODA and TODA in the vicinity of PUP was attempted but was shelved due to the pandemic-imposed limitations but preliminary data gathered then was an important input to this social investigation. This current research centers on the obstacles related to pedal-operated transport vehicles and the possibility of conversion to electrification as part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly urban mobility. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the study collected quantitative data through structured surveys and qualitative insights via interviews and focus group discussions to assess drivers' socio-economic status, their everyday struggles and challenges and their readiness, and perceptions on possible electric vehicle adoption. The study seeks to generate comprehensive data that will inform policymaking and transport planning aimed at improving the livelihoods of pedicab workers while advancing clean transportation technology in an urban university setting.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), through the Research Institute for Human and Social Development (RIHSD), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) on 07 April 2026.

Anchored in a shared vision of an inclusive and child-friendly nation, PUP-RIHSD and CWC have agreed to collaborate on research that matters. This partnership further strengthens their commitment to producing research that is rigorous, ethical, and responsive to the needs of decision- and policy-makers, particularly in advancing the rights and welfare of children.

The signing was attended by CWC Executive Director Undersecretary Angelo Tapales, Division Chief Vladimir Cabrera (Policy Planning and Research Division), and their team, along with PUP Vice President for Research, Extension and Development Dr. Anna Ruby P. Gapasin, RIHSD Director Melcah P. Monsura, and their team.

Through this partnership, RIHSD reaffirms its commitment to translating research into meaningful action for communities and stakeholders, in keeping with the Sintang Paaralan’s enduring principle: Mula Sa ’Yo, Para sa Bayan.

The workshop “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: 𝐀 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐤𝐢𝐭” was successfully conducted on 18 March 2026 through the collaboration of RIHSD-CSIS, Beyond the Ghetto, and Women Doing Philosophy at Claro M. Recto Hall, PUP Sta. Mesa, Manila.

The event featured the University-Funded Research Project of RIHSD-CSIS entitled “𝐺𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟 𝑀𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 𝐻𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝐸𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛: 𝐴 𝑆𝑒𝑙𝑓-𝐸𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑇𝑜𝑜𝑙𝑘𝑖𝑡 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑃ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑠𝑜𝑝ℎ𝑦 𝐷𝑒𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠.” It highlighted a toolkit designed to challenge the limitations of gender mainstreaming within academic philosophy.

At the moment: the RIHSD-CSIS is conducting Beyond the Ghetto No. 34: Gender Regime of Philosophy Departments: A Workshop Introducing the Gender Justice Toolkit in relation to the 2025 University-funded Research of the RIHSD-CSIS, that a Gender Toolkit for Philosophy Departments.

The study was presented at SocioEconomic Research Portal for the Philippines' 12th Knowledge-Sharing Forum that highlighted the importance of indigenous peoples’ voices in research and development.
