Today, June 6, is Korean Memorial Day (현충일).

This national observance commemorates the patriots and fallen heroes whose service and sacrifice helped shape the Korea of today.

As learners of Korean language and culture, we take this opportunity to reflect on the significance of this day and remember the values of courage, dedication, and service that it represents.

💡 DID YOU KNOW?

Every year on June 6 at 10:00 AM, sirens sound throughout South Korea for one minute, signaling a nationwide moment of silence in honor of those who gave their lives for the country. During this time, many people pause their daily activities to pay their respects.

Ateneo KSP Director Participates in Roundtable Discussion on Korean Studies in the Era of Globalization and Digital Transformation🗣🇰🇷

KSP Director Ms. Aurea C. Javier presented how Ateneo continues to sustain Korean Studies in the era of globalization and digital transformation during the roundtable session of the international conference on Vietnam-Korea economic cooperation held at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

Guided by the theme, “Korean Studies in the Era of Globalization and Digital Transformation: New Challenges and Development Strategies for Korean Studies in Vietnam,” Ms. Javier joined the roundtable discussion, albeit online, with colleagues from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Korea. Together, they formed a panel that shared how their institutions are adapting to digital transformation and globalization. The panel also proposed strategic directions for sustaining Korean Studies in Vietnam, drawing from their own experiences and local realities. Their contributions enriched broader discussions on how Korean Studies can be reconfigured in a knowledge-based society.

Through this meaningful exchange, KSP continues to reaffirm its commitment to academic collaboration, regional engagement, and the advancement of Korean Studies. ✨📚🌏🤝 🇰🇷

King Sejong the Great is one of Korea’s most respected historical figures and is best known for creating Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, to make literacy more accessible to the people. He is also known for supporting advancements in science, education, agriculture, music, and technology during the Joseon Dynasty.

South Korea celebrates Mother’s Day and Father’s Day together as 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀’ 𝗗𝗮𝘆 (어버이날) every May 8. Originally observed as Mother’s Day, it officially became Parents’ Day in 1973 to honor both mothers and fathers. One of the most meaningful traditions during this day is giving red carnations and handwritten letters as symbols of love and gratitude.

Labor Day in Korea began on May 1, 1923, was later renamed “Workers’ Day (근로자의 날)” and moved to March 10 during the 1961 military regime, then restored to May 1 in 1994; this year, it is officially designated as a national public holiday and its name restored to “Labor Day (노동절),” expanding recognition and time off to more workers.
