Another school year, another day begins.
The bell rings with that familiar chime.
Yet beneath our smiles lies the weight of our losses and wins,
accumulated over time.
We enter the same building, see the same people,
Yet feel the need to pretend
that the last year we'd shared hadn't pricked at our hearts like a needle
and left us with marks we have yet to comprehend.
Now that it has been unearthed, we must face the truth.
We have come back as different people than we were before.
We've changed so much, although we are still in our youth,
and now we enter a new school year with more to explore.
We find ourselves standing on an uncertain shore,
carrying the lessons, fears, and dreams we hope to see.
We hope that this year will open a new chapter, a door,
allowing us to further explore and discover who we may be.
But I assure you of this, dear reader,
We will grow beyond yesterday's view,
still chasing distant dreams with hearts defiant,
and we'll learn that there's more than we ever knew.
Although it may be the last year of high school for some of you, and the first for others,
we're all figuring out the difference between who we are now and who we were then.
Keep moving, keep chasing, and have faith that you'll slowly quench that thirst
to open new chapters and experience new things, whether you're in Grade 7 or Grade 10.
So here's to the space where tomorrow is drawn,
where change writes its story in all that we do,
where the person we were before is never truly gone,
but serves as a lesson to love others and love our journey too.

[๐๐๐๐] "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction." โ Ronald Reagan
Every June 12, the Philippine flag rises against the morning sky, carrying with it the story of a nation that once dared to dream of freedom. It is a day marked by remembranceโnot of distant dates and forgotten names alone, but of courage that refused to yield and sacrifices that refused to be in vain.
More than a celebration, Independence Day is a reminder. The liberty won by those before us was not simply handed down through the years; it was earned through struggle, unity, and an unwavering belief in a nation worthy of its people. As we honor the past, we are also called to reflect on the present and ask ourselves how we continue to carry that legacy forward.

The Shield has come a long way. As the official school publication of St. Joseph CollegeโOlongapo, Inc., it has existed for decades, ensuring that the heart of journalism continues to seek and uphold the truth.
There are times when society challenges the spirit of journalismโthrough change, conflict, and the ever-evolving voices of the people. In moments like these, journalism has been, and always will be, a way to convey truth, awareness, and inspiration. This is why The Shield is not merely a temporary organization; it is an embodiment of truth where Josephians showcase their talentsโwhether through writing, art, or their own voices.
As Academic Year 2025โ2026 ends, The Shieldโs Editorial Board expresses its heartfelt gratitude to the people who have supported and inspired our journalists to pursue the truth. To the Sentinels, readers, and fellow journalists who have made our publication possible, you have become the reason The Shield has endured.
As our journey ends here, we pass the flame on to the next generation. Even through the toughest storms, the coldest winters, and the untamed chaos, The Shieldโs flame of truth shall never be extinguished.
And even as seasons change, people come and go, and time leaves the past behind, journalism itself will always persevere.
