20 SERIOUS SINS THAT REQUIRE CONFESSION BEFORE RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION
A serious (mortal) sin involves grave matter, knowing it is wrong, and freely choosing it (CCC 1857).
➞ Deliberately missing Sunday or Holy Day Mass without a serious reason
➞ Receiving Holy Communion while aware of serious sin
➞ Sexual activity outside a valid sacramental marriage
➞ Deliberate self-stimulation with full knowledge and consent
➞ Use of explicit sexual material
➞ Marital unfaithfulness
➞ Living together as spouses without a valid Church marriage
➞ Use of birth-prevention methods with full knowledge of Church teaching
➞ Direct involvement in the deliberate ending of an unborn life
➞ Intentional killing, including so-called mercy killing
➞ Serious physical, sexual, or emotional harm to another
➞ Holding deep hatred or wishing grave harm on someone
➞ Stealing significant money or valuable property
➞ Serious dishonesty, fraud, or corruption
➞ Refusing to repay serious debts when able
➞ Serious lying that damages another’s reputation
➞ Treating employees or dependents unjustly
➞ Knowingly rejecting the Catholic faith
➞ Participation in occult or spiritual practices opposed to God
➞ Ongoing grave pride, greed, or envy that causes real harm
Scripture warns us:
“Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will be guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of the Lord” (1 Cor 11:27).
If you are aware of serious sin, go to Confession first. Confession restores grace. The Eucharist strengthens those who are already living in grace.
