The University of the Philippines School of Library and Information Studies (UP SLIS), in cooperation with the UP Library Science Alumni Association, warmly invites you to the 46th Gabriel A. Bernardo Memorial Lecture, commemorating 112 Years of Library and Information Science Education in the Philippines.

This year’s lecture will feature Assoc. Prof. Peter Sy, Vice President for Digital Transformation of the University of the Philippines, who will deliver a keynote titled:

“Epistemic Sovereignty: Language, Sovereignty, and the Future of Philippine Knowledge Institutions.”

As knowledge institutions navigate the challenges of digital transformation, language, and information governance, this lecture will explore how Philippine libraries and academic institutions can shape the future of knowledge in an increasingly technological and globalized landscape.

Huge congrats to our UPSLIS family!

Our BLIS program just made history as the first and only AUN-QA certified LIS program in the Philippines!

This international "seal of approval" proves what we’ve always known: SLIS is world-class. Despite the building still being a work in progress (6 years and counting!), the heart of our school—the teaching, the staff, and the student support—remains top-tier.

We’re so proud to call SLIS home!

UPSLIS' Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) program has been certified by the ASEAN University Network - Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) to be Adequate as Expected!

Our BLIS program is the first and currently only AUN-QA certified LIS program in the Philippines. This certification demonstrates SLIS continuing commitment to improve our curriculum and pedagogy in line with international quality standards for the benefit of the Filipino information professions.

The assessment particularly highlighted SLIS strengths in Teaching and Learning Approach, Academic Staff, and Student Support Services. This demonstrates our dedication to providing a world-class education and supportive learning environment to our students despite not having access to our own building which has been under construction for the past six years.

We thank the SLIS QA office under Asst. Prof. Yhna Therese P. Santos for their work to facilitate the assessment, as well as our alumni and their employers for their valuable insights during the assessment. We are also grateful to our students, faculty, REPS, administrators, and staff for their support during the assessment.

May 2026 be a year of new discoveries in our personal and professional lives, growth for our cherished LIS community, and connection as we continue to support one another across the globe.
