⚖️ Obscene Content on Social Media: A Growing Regulatory Challenge

Social media platforms have transformed how we communicate, but they have also increased the spread of obscene and harmful content.
Today, obscene content is no longer limited to traditional images or videos.
It can include:
🔹 Non-consensual intimate images
🔹 Deepfake sexual content
🔹 AI-generated explicit material
🔹 Digitally manipulated obscene content

The challenge for regulators is balancing: ✅ Freedom of expression ✅ User safety and dignity ✅ Protection of children ✅ Technological innovation

As technology evolves, legal and regulatory frameworks must evolve as well to address new forms of harmful digital content.

🔐 What is Personal Data?

Personal data is any information that can identify a person — directly or indirectly.
It is not just your name or email.
It also includes: 📍 Location data
👤 Gender
🌍 Ethnicity
🙏 Religious beliefs
🧬 Biometric data (fingerprints, face recognition)
🍪 Web cookies
🗳️ Political opinions

Even pseudonymous data (data without a name) can become personal data if a person can still be identified from it.

⚠️ In today’s digital world, almost everything you do online can become personal data.

👉 Protect it. Understand it. Respect it.

Phishing, Vishing and SMShing

Fake emails/text messages/telephone calls purporting to be from a legitimate source such as a bank or e-commerce site are used to induce individuals to reveal personal or financial information.

A new report from Darktrace examined how the security risk of AI is twofold: on one end, there are criminals using the new tool to create convincing phishing lures, deepfakes, spoof brands and imitate professional athletes. On the other hand, there are sports clubs themselves using AI without proper safeguards, creating an entirely new risk surface that can be exploited.

According to Darktrace, this risk is amplified in professional sports “where live events, high-value data, public pressure, fixed schedules, and large networks of partners and suppliers all intersect at once to offer attackers maximum publicity, profit, and potential impact.”

Which social media platforms will be banned for under-16s?

The ban will cover platforms including Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X, the government said.

A complete list of which platforms the ban will apply to has not been released.

However, the government said the UK ban would cover those "whose purpose is to enable social interaction and which allow users to post material".

Features including livestreaming and strangers being able to contact children will also be restricted.

The government said it did not intend to include messaging services like WhatsApp and Signal in the social media ban.

It has also said that YouTube Kids - a version of the video-sharing app designed to be safe for children, with parental controls - will not be included.

Most social media platforms already require children to be over 13 to create an account and use their services.

🤖 Digital Evidence in AI Deepfake Cases

As AI technology advances, fake videos, images, and voice recordings are becoming more realistic.

This raises an important question:

⚖️ How can investigators determine whether content is real or AI-generated?

Possible digital evidence may include:
📁 Original file records
📍 Metadata information
🖥️ Device activity logs
🌐 Upload history
🔍 Technical analysis of the content

Digital evidence helps investigators understand:
✅ Who created the content
✅ When it was created
✅ How it was distributed
✅ Whether it may have been altered

Understanding digital evidence is becoming essential in the fight against AI-enabled fraud and impersonation.
