From a student who is studying Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, and on the path to taking the International Baccalaureate exam. In the IB exam, 7 is the highest score. Yes, I always encourage all students to work towards the As and 7s but nothing is more precious than intellectual curiosity.

Swipe to see my answer to the student’s question. Truth is, we can never be sure of authorial intent. Once written, published, disseminated, the text circulates as part of the public economy of meaning-making. The author is dead, said Roland Barthes. And indeed, they might well be, or not. Again, we can’t be sure. The only thing we have is our own meaning-making, that is to say in the simplest manner possible — the only thing we know is the effect of the text on us, the reader or in this case the audience.
