The last two classes of our graffiti & street art co-curricular activity term 3 program at Ecole Franรงaise Internationale de Kampala were about using spray cans and preparing the surfaces to do that on.
Both primary & secondary students taking part in this activity got busy - painting, spraying, using colors, drafting designs, coming up with concepts & ideas of what to paint, using brushes, bringing ideas to life.
Shoutout to for a long and solid collaboration with us.
Enjoy the visuals.

From March throughout May, we provided 41 successful sessions (Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays) - centered on teaching breakdance, creative movement, productive physical play, life guidance talks among other 21st century skills.
Through instructors like Kwezi Shakur Sparta, Kaweesi Mark, Darius Tinytrix , Ritah Mirembe and Issa Kirumira; we offered group structured classes, 1on1 coaching, physical play, exchanging, cyphering/freestyling, battle opportunities and more.
We have;
- engaged 502 young people in the program; 350 being regulars and 152 having joined since March.
- 167 girls and 335 boys.
- Brought in upto 3 passionate and experienced artist educators & creative facilitators to deliver activities as volunteers.
Signs of impact:
- 2 of our regular students are actively teaching, sharing what they know with other during the sessions and in nearby communities.
- 1 student took on the role of calling attendance list and writing attendance.
- We successfully held learning battles/competitions. A total of 16 students were placed in 4 groups of 4s, we have held group battles every other week. We completed group stage, now we have the top ranking 8 competitors (1-2 of each group), we are going to progress to the knockout stage. Battles are voluntary.
Whatโs new?!.
We introduced play games & activities as an essential part of the session. Given the diversity in ages, backgrounds and energy on a given day. With play we strike a balance; they enjoy, participate more, collaborate and develop more skills - coordination, listening, motor skills, laugh, try new things and more.
Focus areas for next quarter (June, July, August);
- offer a total of 39 sessions.
- add a 3rd class during sessions.
- Hold quarter, semi and final rounds of the learning battles.
- Secure soft/rubber mats to start learning powermoves, flips, tricks and acrobatic elements of breakdance.
- Hold an exhibition for students to showcase their skills to the wider community.
- Carryout family visits to strengthen relationships with parents and caretakers of our program participants.
Testimony.
โI have learned many things, breakdance moves like toprocks, footwork and freezes. I have made new friends. One of my favorite things is cyphering; challenging myself to do the things I have learnt. I advise my fellow young people to have good manners and be good listeners.โ

Creative games is one of the main tools that we use in our work of assisting young people to find, grow and learn to use their strengths and talents well.
Expanding our perspective, getting exposed to & learning new games, adapting & innovating what we have is very important making our play centred approach practical and impactful.

A look into our ongoing Breaking (breakdance) classes on Saturdays.
A three hours long session broken down into 3 classes for ages 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. We cover and go deep from the very foundations of this dance through to creating and personalizing Breaking.
Do you have a young person (within the mentioned ages) interested?. Bring them in.
We also created this program to increase productive employment opportunities for breakdance creatives and artist educators.
Those we choose to instruct classes have gained experience and are practitioners of the dance.

We have added physical play at our tri-weekly sessions in Namuwongo slums. This addition fits well with one of our objectives of creating an environment that is inviting to young people, offers a variety of simple yet powerful engagements, encouraging participating, excites young people to come to and challenges them to do their best.
We are open for collaborations. DM!
