Prediction of Developmental Outcomes in Preterm Infants: A Systematic Review 06/17/2026

An important paper that tells us we are still very far from having perfect prediction of developmental outcomes of preterm birth. My first takeaway is that continued follow up with repeated longitudinal assessment of various areas of development is necessary. Also that what we communicate to families about prognosis must be done with great care.

I’m reading that medical school faculty are having to teach residents about how to recognize and treat pediatric illnesses that they themselves have never seen. Rotavirus diarrhea that is severe enough to require days of hospitalization. Bacterial Pneumonia. Whooping cough in babies too young to be vaccinated because it is going around in older unvaccinated children. Children entering hospitals sick having to undergo invasive tests if they are unvaccinated in order to discover what’s wrong. Or being given strong antibiotics that shouldn’t be needed. One doctor says it’s a slow uptick now but a tidal wave of illnesses that were practically eradicated (like measles) could be coming. What are we doing to our babies with so much false information going around?
