Teaching struggling readers (and ALL readers, for that matter!) should be a MULTI-SENSORY experience! This blending board I use with my students combines an auditory and tactile experience to blend sounds into words, both real and nonsense.

Preparing for a math lesson today...looks a little different than what we learned growing up! Gone are the days of “carrying over”. This is a strategy called partial sums. The student breaks apart the 3-digit number and then adds up the hundreds, tens, and ones. It actually gives a much more foundational meaning to numbers and what it means to “carry over”!

Here’s a Thanksgiving themed sensory tub I created for one of my sweet preschoolers! What are the benefits of sensory play? It encourages language development, incorporates the use of multiple senses, a variety of math skills are practiced (patterning, sorting, measuring), fine motor skills are developed...these are just a few!!! Learning through play—the BEST part of my job!!! 🥰

Virtual tutoring doesn’t have to be boring! Look at this fun packet of multi-sensory items I dropped off for one of my virtual students. These gizmos will be used for a variety of virtual multi-sensory phonemic awareness and reading instruction lessons. Too far away for me to drop them off? No problem! These items can be dropped in the mail very easily!

Did you know that every item we use in a tutoring session gets disinfected and thoroughly cleaned after each use? These fun gadgets all got a nice long hot bath in a cleaning solution after a session today. Want to know more about all the safety measures I take to keep your kiddo safe? Just ask!

Grouping some books according to Lexile level today. Did you know that more than half of all students in the United States receive a Lexile measure each year? It’s so very important to have a variety of books at appropriate levels available to children. Teaching children how to use context clues, identify sight words, word attack strategies and how to choose those “just right” (appropriate level) books are just some of the skills my kiddos learn in our sessions together! There is nothing more amazing than watching a kiddo break the code of reading and then grow into a lover of reading!
