11 AI tools. 1 pneumothorax. 0 correct diagnoses.
Sam Ashoo, MD recently tested 11 medical AI platforms on X-ray interpretation. The results were surprising: every system that attempted to read a chest X-ray missed a left apical pneumothorax, including tools designed specifically for medical imaging.
While some models correctly identified a pediatric fracture, none recognized the pneumothorax. Many still produced detailed reports that confidently called the X-ray normal.
The takeaway? AI can be helpful, but strong image interpretation skills remain essential.
