We caught up with Barton Creek Greenbelt lovers across Austin this weekend, sharing the news of the upcoming broadcast of “Foreverland: the story of the Barton Creek Greenbelt.” Many of the folks we met enjoy the Greenbelt regularly, but have no idea how Austin came to have this vast expanse of protected green space so near to Austin’s urban center. They were surprised to learn there’s a compelling and dramatic story behind the Barton Creek Greenbelt, and that it almost wasn’t created at all. Our fellow Greenbelt-lovers were eager to learn more and excited for the chance to see that story come to life on screen. We invite you to tune in too, and to help spread the word!

Presenting our official Austin PBS trailer! Does our narrator's voice sound familiar? Adriene Mishler, from "Yoga with Adriene" on YouTube, is an Austin native who spent many happy hours wandering the trails of the greenbelt during her childhood. We were thrilled when she enthusiastically agreed to be the voice of Foreverland: the story of the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

We are very thankful for the many people who have supported this important film in so many different ways from financial support, to providing amazing archival material, and technical post-production support to help us make it shine. The staff at the Austin History Center and Austin Parks and Recreation Department went above and beyond as we spent many hours gathering the primary source materials you will see in Foreverland.

This documentary is a testament to the power of community collaboration, of how so many of us love the creek and remain vigilant in its preservation.

Hundreds of Austin citizens packed the city council chambers and testified into the wee hours of the morning on June 7, 1990 in fiery opposition to a massive development planned by developer Jim Bob Moffett in the Barton Creek Watershed. For some, the proposal up for vote at the all-night PUD hearing was a trigger launching the community into action to protect Barton Creek and Barton Springs.

“The Barton Creek Greenbelt didn’t just happen. It could have gone the other way.”

Construction of the Barton Creek Mall was an alarm bell for Austin’s citizens who cared about Barton Creek and Barton Springs. They realized that Austin’s rapid growth had a high cost, potentially the loss of the green spaces that were so distinctive of their unique city.
