Congratulations to Tanecia Mitchell, Ph.D., associate professor in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Urology, on receiving funding through the UAB Nephrology Research and Training Center (NRTC)/Division of Nephrology MPI Pilot Award Program.

The award supports the project, "Alveolar calcification as a novel pathology in chronic kidney disease."

We are proud to see Dr. Mitchell's research recognized through this competitive funding opportunity and look forward to the continued impact of her work!

Charles Peyton, M.D., served as senior author on this multi-institutional study, published in Urologic Oncology, with contributions from members of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Urology and collaborators at the UAMS - University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences .

The study evaluates intraoperative heparin use during radical nephrectomy and IVC tumor thrombectomy, with findings supporting safe, selective use based on patient risk and surgical complexity.

Thomas Chi, M.D., MBA, FACS, and Peter Kolettis, M.D., were both recently featured on WBRC 6 News Good Day Alabama! Dr. Chi discussed kidney stones while Dr. Kolettis spoke to male fertility issues.

Kyle Wood, M.D., MBA, has reached an exciting milestone! UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Urology is proud to have him as part of our department as he completes his 150th Steerable Ureteroscopic Renal Evacuation (SURE) procedure.

SURE is a minimally invasive, FDA-approved technique designed to efficiently remove large kidney stones. With Alabama’s high prevalence of stone disease, this achievement highlights UAB’s expertise and commitment to providing advanced, timely care for even the most complex cases.
