This city is where it all started for me, working with my very first families before BODH Coaching even had a name. Everything about how I coach today traces back to what I learned in those early years.

Coming back for our in-person meet and greet on August 15th feels like a full circle moment.

DM me or drop a comment if you’d like the details on how to RSVP.

What do you do when your ADHD coach has ADHD? Celebrate.

I was diagnosed before college, dealt with avoidance, impulsivity, all of it. That lived experience is exactly what makes the coaching relationship work. Theory only gets you so far.

I have ADHD. I don't write about it often, but it's worth saying.

When parents are looking for a coach for their young adult, there are a lot of reasonable things to consider. Experience, approach, rapport. One item that doesn't always make the list, but I think it should, is whether the coach has actually lived with ADHD themselves.

I was diagnosed right before college, which is pretty common. Many young adults with ADHD have high intelligence and the condition gets overlooked for years. The assumption is always that something else explains it. I white-knuckled my way through situations that should have been handled differently, and for a long time, nobody connected the dots.

I dealt with avoidance. I dealt with impulsivity. I had a deep desire to do well and couldn't always understand why I kept getting in my own way.

That firsthand experience shapes how I coach. Imagine a marriage counselor who has never been married, or hiring a business coach who has never started a business. The theory might be solid. The intuition just isn't there.

When your young adult is struggling to follow through on something, I'm not just working in theory. I know that feeling from the inside, and that changes the dynamic in ways that are hard to manufacture.

I think about success with ADHD the way I think about Waikiki, the man-made beach in Hawaii. The ocean is real, the experience is too, but someone had to know how to construct it thoughtfully. Your young adult can absolutely thrive. They just need to learn how to build a life that works with their brain, not against it.

🐉 Cersei Lannister didn’t fall apart in public. She retreated behind stone walls, shut everyone out, and went cold.

That’s what ADHD shame looks like in young adults. Not drama. Just absence.

When shame gets loud enough, the nervous system shuts down. And from the outside, it looks like laziness, distance, or not caring.

It’s not. It might be Cersei mode.

When every conversation with your son or daughter turns into a check-in, the relationship starts to feel like a job. For both of you.

💬 Start asking open-ended questions instead of progress updates. Something like “what are your thoughts on this?” goes a lot further than “did you do that yet?” It invites them in rather than putting them on defense.

🌱 Find ways to connect that have nothing to do with accountability. A shared hobby, getting out of the house, something that has nothing to do with their next step. Let the relationship breathe. You will be surprised how much opens up when the pressure is off.

If you're seeing this, you're someone I've known for a long time, many of you going back to my time in Atlanta. That's where this work began, and BODH Coaching has since expanded to Southern California. I'm proud of the work we've done helping families support their young adults navigating ADHD and executive functioning challenges through school, finding their footing professionally, and landing (and keeping) great jobs. As we continue to grow, just know we're always in your corner. Feel free to reach out anytime.
