People often ask me if I worry about getting Alzheimerās disease because Iāve watched two generations of women in my family liveāand dieāwith it. Also, almost every week I get a private, vulnerable call from a friend or colleague living this new, brutal reality.
The answer is: Iām mindful, but I try not to be afraid.
Family history deserves respect. I donāt believe in denial or magical thinking. I know my risk, pay attention, stay informed, and make choices that support my health.
But I also donāt want to borrow tomorrowās trouble today.
What we know now is more hopeful than what we knew even a decade ago. Sleep matters. Stress matters. Movement matters. Nutrition matters. Connection and purpose matter. None of these are guaranteesābut they are meaningful places where we have agency.
So I try to focus less on predicting the future and more on caring for the life Iām living now, which is disease-free and pretty darned great!
Science is moving. Researchers are learning more every year. And while answers are still unfolding, hope is not wishful thinkingāitās a coping strategy.
For me, the goal isnāt to live fearfully in the shadow of what might happen. Itās to live intentionally in light of what I can do today.
I created Leeza's Care Connection as a place to begin to find answers for the worry and strategies for the reality. Let us know if we can be there for you on your journey. We know what you're up against ...we can help.
