Your supervisor said "find the gap in the literature." You nodded confidently. You had absolutely no idea what that meant.
Here is what nobody explains in the first year: there is not one type of research gap. There are six. And each one requires a completely different argument in your proposal.
Get this wrong and your committee will spend forty minutes asking why your study is even necessary. Get it right and your entire literature review suddenly has a spine.
Here is the breakdown:
The ๐๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ is when studies exist but contradict each other. Your job is to step into that argument and settle it โ or at least add something useful to the fight.
The ๐๐ป๐ผ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ is the simplest one to explain and the hardest one to find. The research you need simply does not exist yet. You are not correcting anyone. You are going somewhere nobody has been.
The ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น-๐๐ป๐ผ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ is where things get interesting. The research says one thing. Professionals in the field are doing something completely different. That disconnect is your study.
The ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ต๐ผ๐ฑ๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ means previous researchers used the wrong tools, or the same tools repeatedly, and the findings are suffering for it. You are not just asking a new question โ you are asking it better.
The ๐๐บ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ means a theory or finding exists but has never been properly tested in the real world. It looks good on paper. Nobody has checked whether it actually holds.
The ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ฎ๐ฝ means the existing theories do not adequately explain what is happening in your area. A new or adapted framework is not optional โ it is the entire point.
Most students spend months writing a literature review without knowing which gap they are actually arguing. That is why proposals get rejected. Not because the topic is weak, but because the justification has no foundation.
Know your gap before you write a single sentence of your review. Everything else builds from that.
Save this, share it with your cohort, or tag the researcher who is currently lost somewhere in their literature review with no idea why.

Not sure which type of data analysis belongs in your research methodology chapter?
You are not alone. Most Master's and PhD students use data analysis without knowing its exact category โ and that gap shows up in thesis defense questions.
Here are the 6 core types to know:
1. Descriptive Analysis โ summarizes what happened in your data
2. Inferential Analysis โ draws conclusions beyond your sample
3. Exploratory Analysis โ finds patterns before forming hypotheses
4. Predictive Analysis โ forecasts future outcomes using current data
5. Prescriptive Analysis โ recommends actions based on findings
6. Casual Analysis โ examines cause-and-effect relationships
Knowing which type you are applying strengthens your methodology section and helps you justify your analytical choices to your committee.
Save this post, and tag a fellow researcher who is currently writing their thesis.

Nobody warns you that getting a PhD means watching your soul slowly leave your body one revision at a time.
You start with "Thesis v1.0" โ crisp pages, bright eyes, a graduation cap, and a supervisor who seems genuinely pleased to meet you.
Then the committee meets.
Then they meet again.
Then someone suggests you "reconsider your theoretical framework."
By the final revision, you are holding a document called "Thesis FINAL_Final_v3_SUBMIT_THIS_ONE.docx" and you have not seen sunlight since the previous academic year. The coffee cups on your desk have formed a small civilization. Your supervisor still looks exactly the same. You do not.
This is not a warning. This is a rite of passage.
Every researcher who has survived their defense knows the exact moment the transformation happened โ usually somewhere between revision two and the realization that your methodology chapter needed to be rewritten from scratch.
The good news: the zombie version of you still submitted. Still defended. Still got through it.
The file name may be embarrassing, but the degree is real.
Tag a PhD student who is currently somewhere in the middle of this evolution โ they need to know they are not alone.

Be honest โ when you started your literature review, did you just collect sources and hope for the best?
Most students do. And that is exactly why their reviews feel scattered.
Here is what actually works:
1. Open with the broader context โ why does this research area even matter?
2. Name the main challenges โ what problems is the field still dealing with?
3. Show the state-of-the-art โ what has already been done by other researchers?
4. Bring in analysis and criticism โ what worked, what failed, and what can we take away?
5. Land on the research gap โ this is where your own study steps in
Think of it like a funnel. You start wide, then narrow down to exactly why your research needs to exist.
That structure alone can change how your supervisor reads your work.
Drop a "1" in the comments if this is something you are currently working on.

It is 2am. You were sleeping peacefully. Then your brain whispered "what if I reframe my entire conceptual framework."
And just like that, the blanket is on the floor.
Every researcher knows this feeling. The idea does not ask for permission. It does not wait for office hours. It arrives at the worst possible time, with the most inconvenient amount of energy attached to it.
The real joke is that you will lie there fighting it for ten minutes, lose, get up, open your laptop, and write three of your best thesis pages before sunrise.
That is not a sleep disorder. That is called being a researcher.
Tag a friend who has sent you a voice note at midnight saying "I just thought of something."
