Great piece about an amazing former Titan!!!

A note landed in my inbox this week from a proud mom sitting at Charlotte Douglas, waiting to board a flight to Omaha. She was writing about her son, a baseball player for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. (DID YOU WATCH LAST NIGHT? I saw highlights later as our family was at the Charlotte Knights game for a unique team bonding experience... see last post.)

To me, the email Jennifer Howe sent isn't really about baseball.

It’s way more a "Bet On Yourself" story about a little boy from Huntersville who started saying he was going to play baseball at Chapel Hill at a very young age.

Not "maybe someday."

Not "if I'm lucky."

Not "I hope to."

Jennifer says, her son Tyler said early on:

"I'm going to do it."

Somewhere along the way, he bet on himself.

This year, as a true freshman, Tyler Howe earned a starting role for the Tar Heels. His mom says he started all but five games. He then made an ESPN Top 10 catch during the ACC Tournament. Last night, Tyler's Tar Heel team won in the bottom of the 8th inning in a come-from-behind victory.

Here's the part I keep thinking about, based on the email from his mom as she waited to fly across the country to watch it happen.

Tyler bet on himself. Yes. But she bet on him too.

Parents make bets too.

We bet on early practices. We bet on late ones. We bet on carpools and travel teams. We bet on expensive equipment and long weekends. We bet on effort when results aren't guaranteed. We bet on the possibility that a dream taking shape in a backyard or a driveway might someday become real.

I'm literally writing this from a gym right now. Maybe that's why it's in my head. I'm here for a Saturday volleyball practice with P on a beautiful June morning.

Be clear: No complaints from me. It's what she wants, so it's what I want.

Most of these bets we as the adults who love our kids make, are like what I'm doing now. Sitting in a gym on a weekend morning. Most of our bets don't come with a trophy, headline, or trip to Omaha.

But once in a small while... they do.

So, this post is for Tyler Howe, #12 for the Tar Heels. And it's a post for his mom. Jennifer. A mother who cares so much, and bets so much on her son, she emailed waiting at Gate C-something before heading west to watch a dream she's been cultivating for nearly two decades.

Go Heels. Go Tyler.

Go us. Us parent putting in just as much work.

We know who we are.

-Molly
