The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) affirmed today that dyslexia, a reading disability, is entirely unrelated to a person's intelligence or cognitive potential. Dyslexic individuals possess the capacity to think, lead, and achieve at the highest levels, and countless have gone on to accomplish extraordinary achievements across every field.

IDA stands firmly in support of dyslexic learners by advancing evidence-based reading instruction grounded in the science of reading, while also championing the unique strengths, resilience, and potential that define this community.

Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that is neurobiological in origin.

🧠The dyslexic brain has a different processing system. Neuroimaging studies have shown a difference in the processing systems in people with and without dyslexia.

🧠This information gained from the data collected with imaging deepens our understanding of dyslexia and guides our instructional practices.

🧠Because reading is a man-made construct, there is no one area of the brain responsible for reading. The task of reading involves multiple cognitive processes within our brain organization systems.

🧠People with dyslexia have difficulty making quick connections between the critical areas of the brain when reading, but appropriate instruction creates neural pathways for this information to transfer quickly.

🦋Our understanding of the brain systems needed for reading has helped develop appropriate and necessary instruction to help our dyslexic students break the code.
⬇️
We know what to do. Now it’s time to make this instruction and knowledge available to all of our students and educators so that this myth that it’s a developmental lag will no longer be the roadblock to appropriate education.

Student improvement could be seen after only two hours of teaching, according to the researchers. That’s a great return on investment! 📈
