Most of us believe our emotions simply happen to us.

Our child’s behaviour makes us frustrated.

A family member’s comment upsets us.

A difficult situation at school causes us stress.

But what if your emotions are created by your thoughts about what is happening, rather than only by the circumstance itself?

In the final episode of my emotional skills series, we are exploring how to create emotions on purpose.

This does not mean forcing positivity, suppressing difficult feelings or pretending that everything is easy.

It means noticing what you are feeling, understanding the thoughts creating that emotion and intentionally deciding how you want to show up.

When your child is dysregulated, plans change unexpectedly or you feel exhausted and overstimulated, your brain may automatically create panic, frustration, anger or helplessness.

But you can pause and ask:

What emotion do I want to create here?

Maybe it is calm.

Maybe it is patience.

Maybe it is compassion, courage or steadiness.

Your emotional state becomes the emotional atmosphere of your home. Your child can feel urgency and tension, but they can also feel your calm, groundedness, safety and presence.

The goal is not to feel happy all the time.

The goal is to become emotionally capable.

Your child does not need fixing.

Because who they are was never a mistake.

Most parents I work with don’t consciously believe their child is broken.

And yet, without realising it, they carry a constant undercurrent of fixing.

Fix the behaviour.
Fix the reaction.
Fix the moment so things can feel calmer, smoother, more manageable.

That fixing is exhausting.

And it changes your relationship with your child.

When we’re stuck in fixing mode, connection feels hard. Interactions feel strained. Everyone is trying, but no one feels good or happy.

But when your nervous system is regulated, the relationship changes.

Connection becomes easier.
Responses become patient.
Presence replaces to-do’s.

Nothing about your child needs to change first.

This is why the work always begins with YOU, the parent.

You are the emotional anchor of the system.

When you feel steadier, the entire dynamic shifts.

Most parents are taught that helping their child means helping them fit into the world.

Talking.
Learning the rules.
Following routines.
Behaving the “right” way.

But what if that’s not where communication actually begins?

What if your child isn’t struggling to meet you…

but inviting you to meet them?

Many autistic children don’t experience the world in a linear, word-based way.

They feel first.
They sense.
They experience emotion, sound, energy and environment all at once.

It’s a different operating system, not a problem.

And when we try to connect using only logic, words or behaviour correction, it becomes frustrating.

For them and for us.

Connection doesn’t happen when we pull our children into our way of doing.

It happens when we learn to attune to theirs.

That might look like:

• noticing energy instead of behaviour
• responding to connection, not words
• meeting presence with presence
• listening beyond what can be spoken

When parents begin to do this, something changes.

The child changes, because they finally feel heard.
