Today some of the eighth grade students had the opportunity to go to South Mountain State Park and release the rainbow trout that we have raised from eggs this year through Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom program. Thank you to the Hickory chapter of Trout Unlimited for sponsoring this for us. Thank you to the members of Hickory TU, the NC Wildlife Commission, and South Mountain State Park staff for putting on an amazing program today that included the trout release, fly tying and fly casting demonstrations and lessons, macro invertebrate sampling and identification, and animal pelt identification. We also got to enjoy lunch and a short hike along the Jacob Fork River before heading back to school.
