Good Afternoon, Lion Families,

This is Mr. Winston with your weekly update as we wrap up a successful school year at Holbrook.

-First, thank you for your support throughout EOG testing and retesting. Because of the hard work of our students, staff, and families, we were able to see tremendous growth, and many additional students reached proficiency during retesting this week. We are incredibly proud of their effort and perseverance.
-Aside from a few individual retests that may continue through the final days of school, we will complete Science EOG retesting for 8th graders on Monday. This is an important opportunity for those students, and we encourage them to come to school rested, prepared, and ready to give their best effort. We have already seen great success from retesting and are hopeful for another strong day on Monday.
-Your child’s teacher should have communicated whether your child passed or needed to retest, along with their retest results. At this time, state testing guidelines do not allow us to provide numerical scores. Once scores are officially released, we will email families a link with directions on how to access them. Scores will also eventually be available in Infinite Campus under the “Assessments” section.
-On Tuesday, we will celebrate our students during Awards Day:

6th Grade – 9:00 AM
7th Grade – 10:30 AM
8th Grade – 12:00 PM

Teachers should notify families if their child will be receiving an award. Reach out to them if you have questions. We will also recognize Honor Roll and Perfect Attendance students.

Following the 8th-grade ceremony, our 8th graders will participate in a cookout and games as part of their moving-up celebration. Parents are invited to attend this event.

For all awards ceremonies:
-Please park in the main parking lot.
-Follow signs to the auditorium entrance.
-Leave bags and large items in your vehicle.
-If you plan to sign your child out afterward, please bring a valid photo ID.

-On Wednesday, students will participate in our EOG Carnival. This is a student-only celebration recognizing their hard work throughout the testing season. Students have earned tickets through tutoring attendance, testing participation, growth, and achievement. These tickets will be used as currency for games and activities. Students will also have time to sign yearbooks and enjoy fellowship with peers as we celebrate the final day of school together.

-Report cards will be distributed to students on Wednesday. If your child is absent or if you need an additional copy, one can be printed from the front office the following week. Final grades will also be posted in Infinite Campus. Please note that report cards will not be mailed this year.
-Yearbooks were distributed on Friday. 8th graders will have time to sign yearbooks on Tuesday, and all students will have additional signing opportunities on Wednesday. If you would still like to purchase a yearbook, they are available in the front office for $45.00 while supplies last.
-Lastly, thank you for your continued support in making this year such a success. We are fortunate to have families who consistently support their children, our teachers, and the HMS community. Your partnership makes a tremendous difference, and we look forward to building on that relationship next year.
-To our 8th graders: enjoy these final three days of middle school. We are proud of you and excited to cheer you on over the next four years as you work toward high school graduation.

Good evening, Lion Families,

Tomorrow, students who have not yet demonstrated proficiency on the Reading EOG will have the opportunity to re-test. Students who have already demonstrated proficiency will participate in enrichment activities throughout the day.

We are excited to share that 98.2% of eligible students and their families have chosen to participate in retesting. Thank you for your support and encouragement. We had many students come very close to proficiency on their first attempt, and many others who still have the opportunity to show tremendous growth.

Please encourage your child to:

Take the test seriously
Get plenty of rest tonight
Arrive at school on time
Eat breakfast at home or at school
Come prepared to do their very best

On Friday, students will have the opportunity to re-test in Math, and on Monday, eligible 8th-grade students will re-test as well. As a reminder, the testing session runs from 8:30-1:00 p.m. and students cannot be checked out during this time.

We know a test score does not define our students, and we recognize that this has been a long and challenging school year. However, our students have worked incredibly hard, and we are excited to see many of them improve from their first testing session. We are equally committed to continuing meaningful enrichment opportunities for students who have already demonstrated proficiency.

Good afternoon, Lion Families,

This is Mr. Winston with your weekly update.

-We are off to a solid start with EOG testing. Tomorrow, students will test in their third core block. Please help your child be successful by ensuring they get plenty of rest, eat breakfast at home or at school, arrive with a positive attitude, and are seated in class by 8:30 a.m. Testing sessions run approximately from 8:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m., and students cannot be signed out during that time.
-On Tuesday, approximately 100 students will test for Science EOGs, make-up testing, and accommodations. Wednesday will be a schoolwide remediation and enrichment day in addition to makeups and some small group testing. Students who are already proficient will participate in enrichment activities, while others will continue targeted remediation. Thursday will begin ELA retesting, Friday will be Math retesting, and Science retesting will take place on May 18.
-We are proud of our students for taking their time, showing perseverance, and working to their full potential. For students who are not proficient on the first attempt, we are encouraged that many families are taking advantage of the retesting opportunity. Regardless of scores, we will continue providing meaningful instruction and support right up until the final day of school.
-This week was Teacher Appreciation Week, and our staff was incredibly blessed by families and community partners. We would like to thank Woodlawn Baptist Church, City Church, Salinas Honda, Glossy Mobile Detailing, Beta Club, Auto Bell, Hang Time, City of David Church, McDonald’s, McAdenville Wesleyan Church, McAdenville Women’s Club, Lowell Women’s Club, Sports Clips, Christy Moss, Christina Lewis, Kerry White, Sam and Holly Shames, and Kevin and April Rink for their generosity and support. If we accidentally missed anyone, please know we sincerely appreciate you as well. The final days of school are always demanding, and every act of kindness and encouragement means a great deal to our staff and students.
-Thank you to all of our volunteer proctors who gave their time to support testing this week. We truly could not have made it through the first two days without your help, and we look forward to seeing many of you again on Monday.
-Our Spring Sports Banquet will take place on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
-Yearbooks will be distributed this week. A limited number are still available in the front office for $45.00.
-Awards Day will take place on May 19, and parents are invited to attend. Please park in the main lot. Each ceremony should last approximately 45 minutes.

Following the 8th grade ceremony, students will participate in a cookout and yearbook signing celebration. Students may also bring a white t-shirt and markers if they would like classmates to sign them.
-While summer break is approaching, it is never too early to think about continued academic support. We encourage families to connect with Hope in Christ Tutoring if your child could benefit from additional assistance. Several of our students have flourished this year because of their after-school tutoring program. Please see the flyer attached to the email for more information.

We have 8 days remaining in the school year, and we plan to maximize every moment. Please remind your child that expectations for behavior, respect, and following the GCS Code of Conduct remain in place through the final day of school. We sincerely appreciate your partnership and support as we finish the year strong together.

Day 1 of testing is officially in the books. We are so proud of our students for taking their time, staying focused, and working to their full potential.

A huge thank you to our proctors who generously gave their time today. Your support and flexibility made a real difference, and you were excellent throughout the day. We also want to recognize our staff who worked tirelessly all year and showed up today ready to serve (some in new roles) and support wherever needed. We are grateful for your dedication and teamwork.

We will resume testing tomorrow, with students testing in their second core class. Please help your child be successful by ensuring they get a full night’s rest, eat breakfast at home or at school, and are seated and ready to begin by 8:30 a.m.

A few important reminders:

We cannot complete student checkouts once testing begins.
The testing window is approximately 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
All cell phones and electronic devices must be powered off and turned in to the teacher. Failure to do so will result in a testing misadministration and school consequences.

Our goal is to maintain a secure, calm, and fair testing environment for all students while following all state guidelines.

Tomorrow, the majority of our students will begin EOG testing. This year, we are testing by core blocks rather than by subject, which may look a little different from other schools. Below are a few important reminders to help ensure a smooth and successful day:

-Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep tonight.
-Help set a positive tone-encouragement and calm, confident energy go a long way.
-Ensure your child eats breakfast at home or plans to eat breakfast at school.
-Students must be present and seated in class by 8:30 AM.
-Once a student begins testing, they cannot be checked out, even if they finish early. Testing is expected to run from approximately 8:30 AM–1:00 PM.
-All cell phones, smartwatches, and electronic devices must be turned in to the homeroom teacher and powered OFF. Any device that makes noise or is in a student’s possession during testing may result in a testing irregularity and school consequences.

We are excited for our students to show what they know. While we understand testing can bring some stress, this is simply an opportunity for students to do their best and demonstrate their learning. Effort and focus are what matter most.

This is Mr. Winston with your weekly update.

-EOG Testing Begins This Week
EOG testing is here, and we are ready. This year, students will test by core block. We will begin on Thursday with Block 1 and continue on Friday with Block 2.

-Testing Schedule:
Thursday, May 7 – Core Block 1
Friday, May 8 – Core Block 2
Monday, May 11 – Core Block 3
Tuesday, May 12 – Four-man team (approximately 80 students)

-Testing will take place daily from 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM.
Students who are not testing during a block will participate in enrichment activities. Students must arrive on time each day. Students cannot be signed out during testing hours, so please plan accordingly.

-Re-Testing & Remediation
After the first round of testing, we will begin remediation on May 13, followed by re-testing starting May 14. Any student who does not demonstrate proficiency will have the opportunity to retest. Students who are proficient will engage in enrichment activities during this time.

-We Need Proctors
We are still in need of testing proctors and would greatly appreciate your support. We need approximately 20 proctors for each of the first three testing days. Please consider volunteering using the link below:

-Yearbooks

-8th Grade Prom
A special thank you to Ms. Franklin and everyone who helped organize a fantastic 8th-grade prom. It was a memorable night for our students, and we appreciate all the hard work that went into making it a success.

-Band Concert
Please come out and support our band students at their final concert of the year. The performance will begin at 6:00 PM in the auditorium. Doors will open at 5:30 PM. Please park in the main lot and plan to stay for the entire performance.

-Athletics Update
Congratulations to our baseball and soccer teams for finishing the season with wins over Grier. Our boys’ track team finished as county runner-up, and our girls’ team placed fifth.
A special congratulations to Messiah Patterson for setting county records in the long jump and 200m. In addition, our 4x400 relay team-Deon Carter, Nayir Thomas, LaDarrius Pratt, and Hudaifah Jamal-also broke the county record. We are proud of all our student-athletes for finishing strong and saving their best efforts when they mattered the most.

-Help us out
We are laser-focused on finishing the year strong. Please speak with your child about the importance of staying focused, following expectations, and making good decisions. Students who disrupt the learning environment or fail to meet expectations may face consequences, including starting their summer break early.

Un reconocimiento especial a Messiah Patterson por establecer récords del condado en salto de longitud y en los 200 metros. This is Mr. Winston with your weekly update:

-We are looking forward to a strong final push to close out the school year. As we approach testing, we will be maximizing every moment of each day to ensure students are fully prepared. While we have some fun activities planned for the final days of school, our focus remains laser-focused on finishing strong.
-Yearbooks are still available for purchase! Please note that sales are first-come, first-served, and quantities are limited. Once they are sold out, no additional copies will be available. We encourage you to order early to guarantee your child receives one. Orders can be placed online through Jostens through May 1st. A flyer with a QR code is attached to your email.
8th Grade Prom: Ms. Franklin will distribute prom tickets in the cafeteria on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. The event will be held at St. John’s Missionary Outreach Center (1282 Bradford Heights Rd., Gastonia, NC 28054), and the address will also be printed on each ticket. Students must bring their ticket for entry, and we strongly encourage all students to arrive on time.
If your student needs assistance, please contact Ms. Franklin no later than Monday, April 27, 2026. Parents and staff interested in helping with setup are invited to come to the venue on Friday, May 1st at 7:00 PM.
-We are still in need of EOG testing proctors for May 7, May 8, and May 11. If testing began today, we would not have enough coverage, so we are depending on your support. Proctors must be at least 18 years old, have graduated from high school, and possess a valid driver’s license. EOG Testing Schedule:
Testing will take place during core blocks:

Thursday, May 7 – Core Block 1
Friday, May 8 – Core Block 2
Monday, May 11 – Core Block 3
Tuesday, May 12 – Four-man team (approximately 80 students)

Students who are not testing during a block will participate in enrichment activities. Testing will run daily from 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM.
It is critical that all students arrive on time. Please note that students may not be signed out during testing hours, so plan accordingly.

-Please note that once our first round of testing is complete, we will begin re-testing. We want anyone who does not show proficiency to be able to retest to see if they can do better the second time. We will spend time remediating on the 13th and begin retesting on the 14th. Even students who show proficiency will get an opportunity for enrichment activities, while others take advantage of retesting.

-Awards Day will be held on Tuesday, May 19th:
6th Grade – 9:00 AM
7th Grade – 10:30 AM
8th Grade – 12:00 PM
Following the 8th-grade award ceremony, 8th-grade students will participate in a cookout to celebrate their middle school experience. Families are invited to attend, and additional details will be shared soon.
- We hope you will come out to support our chorus students at their concert on Thursday evening. Doors open at 6:30 PM, and the performance begins at 7:00 PM.
Athletics Update:
-Our baseball and soccer teams competed hard this week against Stanley and Mt. Holly. Both teams will close out their seasons against Grier on Monday. Soccer will host at Holbrook at 4:00 PM, and baseball will play at CaroMont Park at 4:30 PM.
-Congratulations to our boys track team for winning the divisional meet! Our girls team finished 3rd. Both teams will compete in the county meet at Stuart Cramer this Wednesday as they pursue a championship.

Nuestros equipos de béisbol y fútbol compitieron con esfuerzo esta semana contra Stanley y Mt. Holly. Ambos equipos cerrarán su temporada contra Grier el lunes. El equipo de fútbol jugará en casa en Holbrook a las 4:00 p.m., y el equipo de béisbol jugará en CaroMont Park a las 4:30 p.m.
¡Felicitaciones a nuestro equipo masculino de atletismo por ganar el encuentro divisional! El equipo femenino obtuvo el 3.er lugar. Ambos equipos competirán en el campeonato del condado este miércoles en Stuart Cramer en busca del título.
