Whoaaaaa. 11 years!?

Sipping coffee and doom scrolling on FB while I have a break between getting kids to school and this little nugget of a memory pops up.

I was so excited to get these results. We had moved to NC and immediately (and I mean like the weekend after we moved) found out I was pregnant with my second kiddo. The state lost my application for my nursing license in their own system so I had to wait and wait and couldn’t work as a nurse until we figured out what the heck had happened. So, I was a SAHM to a 1 year old, sooooo sick all the time, and spent naps and evenings taking classes and studying. Worth it!

I had that second baby, ended up not taking any of the RN jobs I was offered and when a rare opening for an inpatient IBCLC position opened up at one of the local hospitals - I got it! Then after a bit, I launched a practice while continuing the hospital work, had another baby (plot twist), did both gigs for a while and then left the hospital job to work only for myself. And here we are! ❤️

Finally got around to a doing a quick year in review since 2025 seems to be starting off with a bang! It’s been so busy already.

This year was a little more about balance and settling in to new routines for me. I spent a lot of time doing behind boring, behind the scenes work like redoing my charting forms and processes to make things a bit more streamlined. I don’t think that will ever end but it was nice to benefit from that effort this year.

Here’s hoping to a great 2025!!

About the IBCLC

Rachael Anastasio Collins is a Registered Nurse (RN) and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with experience as a mother/baby nurse, inpatient and outpatient lactation consultant, perinatal educator, and CPR instructor.

Her journey to lactation work and advocacy started when on a clinical rotation she found herself lacking the education and skills needed to help a new mother and baby learn to breastfeed. It was heartbreaking and frankly she found it upsetting that such a fundamental part of life was glossed over and ignored in her education. Never wanting to be in that position again she set about educating herself on lactation and breastfeeding.

When she began her career as a Registered Nurse on a mother/baby unit at a large women’s hospital in Chicago she found that much of her time was spent assisting with and supporting breastfeeding parents. She began working her way through various certifications until she became an IBCLC in 2014.

She currently supports families at a local hospital on a part-time basis and is excited to assist families through Milked Lactation Services, LLC. She has a special interest on the impact of oral tethers on breastfeeding, spreading evidence-based lactation knowledge to families she works with (or really anyone who will listen), and empowering parents to have the most satisfying breastfeeding experience possible. She is an advocate for normalizing breastfeeding and returning the learned history and skills of breastfeeding to our culture.
