The history of Meck Dec Day Marking 250 years since signing Mecklenburg County Declaration of Independence

05/05/2025

Inspired by Paul Revere’s Ride in Boston April 18, 1775, and buoyed by the subsequent Battles of Lexington & Concord in the Massachusetts Colony, Civic Leaders across Mecklenburg in the North Carolina Colony came together on May 19-20, 1775, at a Convention held in the Old Court House in Charlotte, to join in the patriotic revolution sweeping the American Colonies.

There, they crafted and signed the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, more than a year before the one adopted and published in Philadelphia, which we celebrate as our nation’s founding on July 4, 1776. So in this year of 2025—the 250th Anniversary of the MeckDec—join in festivities marking both our local and national heritage, as we remember this key moment in American history!

Watch here for events spanning the last three weeks of May, including May 20th which is MeckDec Day itself. And be sure to also look here for how to get your copy of “One Day Revolution” with new bio’s of the MeckDec Signers—the patriots who first declared independence.
