Residency spots getting increasingly competitive. "Anesthesiology is also having a moment. Three years ago, a Step 2 score of 240 was safe. Today, matched applicants average 252 — a 12-point jump driven by a national shortage, rising salaries (now $450k-$550k to start), and sometimes, a shift-based scheduling model that offers something surgical specialties rarely do: a possible “end” to the workday. Applicants who don’t signal interest to specific programs match at just a 5% rate. The specialty has gone from safety school to scramble."

AI diagnosis: "On the real ER cases — the messiest, most clinically relevant test — the AI identified the correct or very close diagnosis in 67.1% of cases at initial triage, 72.4% at ER physician evaluation, and 81.6% at hospital admission. The two attending physicians scored 55.3% and 50.0% at triage, 61.8% and 52.6% at ER evaluation, and 78.9% and 69.7% at admission. The gap was widest at initial triage.

On management reasoning using expert-scored clinical vignettes, the AI scored a median of 89%. Physicians with conventional resources scored 34%. That is not a typo."

Some colleagues are saying it’s a major medicolegal trap—if there’s a bad outcome and a general anesthesiologist did the case, you could be in jeopardy. Others argue it’s an inappropriate overreach, since all board-certified anesthesiologists are fully trained to handle cardiac comorbidities.
