Most dog owners have never looked at their dog's gums. This is one of the fastest ways to know if something is seriously wrong, and it takes ten seconds.

Here's what healthy looks like: bubblegum pink, moist, and when you press gently and release the color comes back within 2 seconds. That's the capillary refill test.

Here's what is NOT okay:

⚠️ White or pale: possible shock or internal bleeding. Emergency vet immediately. ⚠️ Blue or purple: not enough oxygen. This is a 911 situation. ⚠️ Bright red: possible heatstroke or toxin exposure. ⚠️ Tacky or dry: dehydration.

Pro tip: take a photo of your dog's gums RIGHT NOW while they are healthy and save it in your phone. When something feels off you will have a real baseline to compare to. That one photo could save precious time.

I'm standing in my own front yard right now. And what I'm holding in my hand could send your dog to the emergency vet.
These are daffodils growing right outside my door and most dog owners have no idea how dangerous they are. The bulb is the most toxic part. If your dog digs, pay close attention. Same goes for tulips.
Here's what else to watch for:
⚠️ Sago Palm: every part is toxic. Even a small amount can cause liver failure.
⚠️ Azalea: a few leaves can cause vomiting, collapse, and heart problems.
These are not rare plants. They are in garden centers everywhere. They might be growing in your yard right now.

There are signs I would never ignore or "wait and see" on with my dog.

Years ago I had a griffon mix. One day I found him sitting completely still, stiff, and something about his posture just felt wrong.

I took him to the vet immediately. He had a serious eye infection and ended up losing that eye. The vet told me he could have lost both if I had waited even a little longer.

That experience never left me.
