April is distracted driving awareness month. Distractions can be visual( eyes off the road), manual (hands off the wheel), and cognitive (mind off driving). Texting is considered the most dangerous behavior as it involves all three types simultaneously. Pull over for urgent texts. Put phone on Do Not Disturb while driving. Designate a Texter. Stop to eat or perform any type of personal grooming. In 2023, distracted driving was responsible for 3,275 deaths in the U.S. .

March is National Nutrition Month, here are a few ideas for your family to approach eating healthier:
*Let your children pick out a new fruit or vegetable from the grocery store weekly, plan together how to prepare it in a healthy way.
*Include whole grains in your menu, look for "whole grain" to be the first ingredient listed.
*Be a good role model, our children model the healthy habits they see their parents doing.
*Read nutrition facts labels- limit sodium, added sugars, saturated fat and avoid trans fat.
*Cook more at home where you have control over the ingredients in your food and the amount you eat and serve.

* Eat together as a family. Eating together with friends and family can reduce stress, boost self-esteem and make everyone more connected!

February is National Children's Dental Health Month. Visits to the dentist should start with your child's first birthday. All young children need help with brushing from an adult. When possible, use a soft washcloth to wipe your baby's gums after feedings. Never put babies to bed with a bottle. As soon as you see a tooth in your baby's mouth you can start to brush! Use a small smear(grain of rice) of toothpaste 2 times a day. children 3-6, use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste 2 times a day. Let them practice with the brush before you help them. Good oral health starts early!

Parents, there are some interesting health related classes coming up this spring being offered for free through the Little Elm ISD Parent Education Academy. Take time to take charge of your health and be the best version of yourself for your families. You matter!
