It's hard to love people we don't know . . . And the less that we have real relationships in our communities the more misunderstandings and fear have room to grow.
You don't have to be a professional English teacher to get to know your international neighbors or even practice English with others. Language learning is an incredible relationship builder and I have learned so much from my friends who speak other languages too.

As an ESOL teacher, I get the privilege to learn from my students and call many friends. I also have been gifted many friends as I myself have struggled through learning new languages. There's a humility and simplicity that comes from learning "hello" and "I am" for the first time in a new tongue.
I have felt increasingly that the positive side of real friendships and relationships in the international community is lost in the political drama that is unfolding and changing every day.
My International community has made my world a better place and a better person in all of my walks of life. The real mindset shift is not just supporting the International community as a "them" outside of the communal "us." But rather really moving to the we that stands with the "us."
