World eBook Library is a shared digital resource created to help libraries to free room on their shelves, save costs, and provide greater levels of access to more content than ever before. By digitizing content to high standards and supporting its long-term protection, we also aim to help libraries and publishers convert their collections and publishing activities from print to digital operations. During the Islamic Golden Age, Baghdad was the center of the world’s knowledge. It was said in the middle of Baghdad was a public academy Called the Baghdad House of Wisdom, also know as Grand Library of Baghdad. The House of Wisdom was said to contain more than 400,000 books, along with the original publications regarding the Algebraic numeric system.
The House of Wisdom contained the entire collection of Greek medical books, including famous pieces by Galen and Hippocrates. The Sabian Thābit ibn Qurra (826–901) also included the great works by Apollonius, Archimedes, Euclid and Ptolemy. Translations of this era were superior to earlier ones.
Unfortunately it was lost to the ravages of war, and the House of Wisdom was destroyed along with all the books in 1258, by invading Mongols. It was later recorded that when the mongols threw all the books into the Tigris River that the river turned black with Ink.
The World Library Foundation encourages all of us to support our local library’s public domain digitalization efforts, to archive and preserve humanities intellectual history.
