𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝟭, also known as 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘇 𝟭, is a type of abnormal heart rhythm that affects the electrical conduction system of the heart. It is characterized by a progressive lengthening of the PR interval on an electrocardiogram (ECG) until a QRS complex is dropped. The PR interval is the time it takes for the electrical impulse to travel from the atria to the ventricles.

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to one or more organ systems, most commonly the liver and kidneys. Pre-eclampsia/Eclampsia is the most leading cause of maternal mortality. It usually develops after the 20th week of pregnancy and can also occur up to 6 weeks postpartum.
Common symptoms include high blood pressure, headaches, visual disturbances, abdominal pain, protein in the urine (proteinuria), swelling due to fluid retention.
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗶𝗮:
▪️Keep the blood pressure 130-150/80-100
▪️Labetalol, hydralazine, and nifedipine are your first line meds to get the BP down
▪️Magnesium should be given to help prevent seizures. The therapeutic level is 4.8 - 8.4. Make sure to draw mg 1 hour after loading dose and then Q 6 hours.
▪️A complication of pre-eclampsia is HELLP syndrome = hemolysis, elevated LFT’s, low platelets
▪️Make sure the doc checks fetal heart tones
▪️If your patient has a baby within the last 6 weeks, high blood pressure is an emergency and should be treated immediately
▪️If you do not have a L&D unit at your hospital, immediately start a transfer to an appropriate hospital to get the patient in the safest hands
