"Just stop." "Show some willpower." "It's a choice."
If addiction worked that way, no one would struggle. But it doesn't — and the science is clear.
Addiction is a medical condition that physically changes the brain's reward and decision-making systems. It's not a moral failing. And here's what most people get wrong: addiction, physical dependence, and mental health conditions are deeply connected but NOT the same thing — and they don't share the same treatment.
✅ Physical dependence → managed with medical detox
✅ Addiction → treated with behavioral and psychological care
✅ Co-occurring mental health conditions → treated together, not separately
Understanding the difference can change — and save — a life.

After 28 years around opioid recovery, I've watched families make life-altering decisions in the worst moments of their lives, often armed with the wrong information. The same myths come up again and again. That detox is the finish line.
That suffering through withdrawal somehow builds character.
That all treatment programs are basically the same.
That medication is just trading one addiction for another.
None of these are true. And the cost of believing them can be devastating.
I wrote a piece this week naming the 7 myths I find myself correcting most often. It's not a polite article. It says some things the addiction treatment industry would rather not say out loud, including the way insurance reimbursement, not clinical reasoning, often determines how long programs last.
I shared it because families deserve better than what they're currently being told.
If you have a loved one navigating this, or if you know someone who does, please share this. The right information at the right time can change everything.
