In 2025, SCF completed an 8-week high-impact tutoring program at Vernon City Elementary with support of a grant from the Vernon CommUNITY Fund.

Administrators welcomed our small-group model to provide additional support to students who were furthest behind academically. In one case, a student reading at a significantly lower level initially cried when asked to read aloud. By the end of the cycle, this student was reading with confidence and pride. It’s results like that which make our tutors shine with pride!

Academic gains were measurable. Using diagnostic assessments, where a 10-point increase is roughly equivalent to one month of academic growth, students improved an average of 21 points - slightly more than two months of reading progress during the tutoring cycle. 82% of students we served in Vernon made such measurable improvements!

All this was possible because of the 2025 grant from Vernon CommUNITY Fund. Thank you!

All of us here at Southeast Community Foundation are deeply saddened by the passing of our former Board Member, Barry Smith. We are grateful for his dedicated service, thoughtful leadership, and the care he showed for our mission and community. His contributions made a lasting impact, and he will be remembered with respect and deep appreciation. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Barry's family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with and knowing him.
