Knowing what the emergency is, is first thing to be aware of
before offering help to a victim in distress. Signs and symptoms can be mistakenly diagnosed, especially in a high panic situation.

For example, the signs and symptoms of choking and heart attack look almost the same. In that mis-diagnoses, you could end up giving a choking victim CPR instead of the heimlick maneuver. This kind of mistake can make even the best CPR ineffective and can cost a victim their life. So making sure that you have properly assessed what the emergency is before performing any first aid and CPR, can be very essential and will make the difference between Life and Death.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?
Ask the persons who is with the injured person questions like, is he choking? You can also ask the injured person if he or she is conscious and responding, are they choking? Usually they will be clutching their throats and nodding yes if that is the case.

This, amongst other signs and symptoms of choking will give you the confidence in proceeding with the heimlich maneuver. Being trained properly in CPR and Basic Life Support, will eliminate any doubts that may prop up during these kinds of emergencies and most of all, it will save a life.
