The once abandoned Pocketbook Factory building located in Hudson, NY will be reimagined as a hotel and restaurant, bathhouse/spa, and mixed-use complex for art, hospitality, and wellness.

Working alongside the visionaries of ZEZE, the 10A Trade School fellowship and it's participants will help build from the ground up a boundary-breaking model for a space that centers inclusivity, creativity, and q***rness in community.

Designed to introduce fellows to ZEZE’s concepts of “space as functional sculpture”, “hotel as exhibition,” and to interrogate how the bathhouse honors the public and the private life, we introduce three exciting initiatives:

THE STORYTELLING FELLOW : For Inter-disciplinary storytellers (photographers, writers, filmmakers, artists, archivists, historians, journalists, ethnographers) who are interested in launching a documentary project to capture the narrative arc of the building and development process, from concept to actualization.

THE “HOTEL AS EXHIBITION” FELLOW: For curators, designers, makers, and buyers who are interested in being an integral part of actualizing ZEZE Hudson’s art-driven design concept “Hotel as Exhibition”.

THE WELLNESS RESEARCH FELLOW: For dreamers, wellness aficionados, designers who want to help develop the conceptual framework around ZEZE’s bathhouse, reimagining the recovery practice in a manner that centers the experiences of our q***r and trans communities.

We encourage all LGBTQIA2S+ Black and Brown learners and practitioners of all ages to consider submitting for a chance to participate in this big, BOLD, one-of-a-kind opportunity.

This Saturday, May 7 (12-3pm) we’re *live* at The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture with a guided workshop and communal archive study, centering the legacy and works of our dear ancestor, Dr. Ron Simmons. Come gather in in Harlem as we jointly explore selections from The Ron Simmons’ papers, including Simmons’ early writings and editorial work, including ’s Torch ‘72, contributions to Blacklight, a Black gay newspaper of 1980’s Washington, D.C., and more.

We’ll be joined by archivists at The Schomburg and led in self-inquiry exercises and Torch ‘72 close reads by and of the Social Action Archive Committee, a networked collective of individual researchers who have worked with Visual AIDS artist archives and UAlbany’s archives.

How do we study protest from the past as an inquiry for individual and collective protest in the present? Our second offering during 10A's Publishing and A History of Black Q***r Protest course series delves into the archive of Ron Simmons, using his editorial legacy and lens as a case study and workshop for self-discovery re: the formation of our own voice, format, and medium(s) in protest. Join us on Saturday, April 30 from 1:30-3:30pm EST (virtual or IRL in Hudson).

Registration is open and class is free to attend, come explore Simmons’ seminal work, Torch ‘72 and come prepared to gaze, to question, to wonder, to reflect amongst other 10A learners!

Who is Ron Simmons?

Activist, photographer, writer, and professor, Brooklyn native Dr. Ron Simmons (1950-2020) made an indelible mark on the lives of countless Americans. He co-founded the organization Us Helping Us, specializing in HIV/AIDS care and prevention for Black gay and bis*xual men. A selection of his writings can be found in the Ron Simmons Reader. In 1987 he received his PhD in Mass Communications from Howard University, where he also served as a professor from 1986 to 1992.

Dr. Simmons’s was an undergraduate student in Afro-American studies at University at Albany, class of 1972. (He later completed two master degrees: African History (1978) and Educational Communications (1979).) During his senior year, Ron was the editor-in-chief of the university’s yearbook Torch. An editorial tour de force, Torch ’72 broke with the traditional yearbook formats, gave voice to emerging Black, gay, Puerto Rican, and women’s liberation movements, drew attention to environmental degradation, and protested the Vietnam War. Today it is recognized as an invaluable photo essay and documentation of its era.

Join the 10A team and Social Action Archive Committee members THIS SATURDAY, April 30 at 1:30pm EST, who will lead us in a workshop using AIDS activist, writer, and photographer Ron Simmons’ seminal work, Torch’72 as a touchstone for the lineage and potential of individual stories and collective actions.

Together we reinterpret the very values espoused in Ron Simmons’ 1972 yearbook through the lens of our own lived experiences: How do we develop our own unique voices as makers, artists, writers and therefore, as protestors? How does voice evolve over time? How does our protest follow?

Hard Copies of Torch’72 will be provided in the space for IRL participants to look through during the workshop and digital copies will be made available to digital participants. Come curious — we’ll provide the rest.

THIS SATURDAY, join us for the kickoff of Publishing and a History of Black Q***r Protest, running from April 23 - May 14, and open to black and brown q***r and trans learners of all ages.

First Up: SATURDAY APRIL 23, from 1:30-3:30 ET, artist and designer Jon Key, of the highly-celebrated Brooklyn-based design studio MorcosKey, joins us to share his independent research delving into the long yet often obscured history of Black q***r publishing from the 1800s to now, an "Igniting Talk" and Q&A offered virtually and IRL at our headquarters in HQ.
