Happy Halloween eve, or as it’s known in Detroit, Devil’s Night! This name, as with many of our Halloween traditions and associations with the spooky day, has roots in history and culture. Take the time to learn about one popular token of Halloween at the Voodoo Museum in New Orleans. Explore the history of Voodoo, Zombies, Altar Room, and much more with a museum walkthrough or go on an exhilarating cemetery tour. Make sure to grab a “love potion” from the museum shop on your way out or get a reading from one of the many psychics on site.

Known for its famous Amateur Nights – which shot many a talented artist into the limelight – the Apollo Theater was the starting point for a number of music’s finest. For instance, Ella Fitzgerald, who stole the show at the Apollo’s first amateur night, saw her career take off soon after and she wasn’t the only one. Other Amateur Night winners included Billie Holiday, Jimi Hendrix, and Lauryn Hill, not to mention small performers such as Marvin Gaye and Stevie wonder who graced the Apollo stage before becoming the household names that they are today.

The Apollo is the birthplace of some of music’s biggest acts and the otherwise modest theater is a symbol of Harlem and the arts, people, and culture at its heart.
