Gutted by the news that actor Matt DeCaro has journeyed on.
I mourn his loss with the entire Chicago theatre family, for Matt was a formidable force in that landscape.

I was so lucky I had the great privelege of directing Matt in his Jeff Award winning performance as Big Daddy in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at Drury Lane Theatre in 2018.
I say “direct”, but truthfully, I was so in awe of Matt’s talent and grace I mostly got out of his way. I learned so much from him.
His Big Daddy was ferocious and gentle, cruel and vulnerable and he cursed “mendacity” from every fiber of his being.
He was generous and caring to the entire cast and all of the staff and creatives. When he thundered up the gorgeous staircase of Kevin Depinet’s stunning set at the end of Act One, it elicited a gasp of gigantic proportions— he took our breath away.

Supported by a gorgeous company led by Cindy Gold, Mike Milligan, Anthony Bowden, Genevieve Angelson, with Gail Rastorfer, Craig Spidle, Joe Bianco, Reginald Kent Robinson, Jr., Donica Lynn, Marcus Moore, Shane Rhoades, Caron Bunis, Vincent Kracht, Emma Jo Boyden, and Janet Ulrich Brooks.

Scott Silberstein’s stunning video with the great Donica Lynn singing a heartbreaking, soul crushing Missisippi blues song...

Journey On in peace dear Matt.
We’ll never forget you.

About the Play:
Chicago is a 1926 satire inspired by true crime cases reported by journalist Maurine Dallas Watkins. The play follows two women accused of murder who face the court of public opinion and the law. Known today as the basis for the iconic 1975 musical, this original work explores fame, scandal, and justice in 1920s Chicago. The story has inspired multiple adaptations, including the 1927 film Chicago, the 1942 film Roxie Hart, and the 2002 film Chicago.

About The Players
Founded in 1888 by legendary actor Edwin Booth, The Players Club has long been a historic hub for New York City’s theatrical and artistic community. Located at 16 Gramercy Park South, the club has hosted generations of performances, readings, and cultural gatherings in its elegant spaces. Gingold Theatrical Group’s signature program, Project Shaw, began at The Players in 2006, and we are thrilled to mark its auspicious return in 2025 in honor of the program’s 20th anniversary, celebrating two decades of presenting thought-provoking theater inspired by the works of George Bernard Shaw.

Sunday we closed MALTBY & SHIRE’s “ABOUT TIME” at The Marjorie S. Dean Little Theatre on the UWS.

Thank you to all who came to see it!

I made a little speech but got so emotional I didn’t get to say the last two sentences:

“Richard & David—Thank you for being the alchemists of the human condition. The messy, beautiful complexity of our lives has never been in better hands.”

With all my love and deepest gratitude—
