Art is a form of theory making.

"Here, however, we get the real deal: the books have been read, the posters have been hung, and they show signs of wear and tear, speaking to the initial motivations of the post-revolution Constructivists: get the Soviet word out. When shown in their original forms, en masse, these pamphlets, posters, magazines, and books are all overtly political. Colors are representative of the Russian Civil War and ‘red’ beats ‘white’; images of Lenin are based upon the strictures of Orthodox iconography. It becomes clear that these artists were themselves cogs in the Soviet propaganda machine, a role that may have been forgotten 100 years later, in a contemporary climate where rock bands co-opt political imagery for their own ends (something that, 15 years ago, Hal Foster referred to as ‘fetish*tic constructivism’)."

Some short notes on Dystopianist popular culture and the rise of Fascism by Eve Mitchell.
"Utopian and dystopian themed media as a broader trend pop up historically in moments of crisis: world wars, economic and political crises, mass uprisings and movements, etc. They express the day to day experience of socialism or barbarism. What makes today’s dystopian stories in the U.S. new and different is the way they illustrate the uniqueness of our time: the crisis of social reproduction, and the political vacuum in danger of being filled by anti-woman, anti-immigrant, white supremacist fascism."

What we are listening to for Pride month. Super important stuff.
"What has been the relationship between q***r struggles and other struggles on the left against racism, imperialism, and war? It’s often assumed that gay and le***an liberation has run on its own separate track, but historian Emily Hobson argues that’s a misconception. She reflects on the history of LGBTQ liberation and the politics of solidarity, including with people resisting U.S. intervention in Central America."
