Everyday is french

🇮🇹Firenze è bellissima….BUT why, when I try to speak Italian, do Italians answer me in English? Now I understand the frustration of my beginner students in Paris 🇫🇷

🇫🇷Ne mangez pas de viande aujourd’hui, c’est vendredi saint ! ….disait ma maman quand nous étions petit. La phrase résonne encore dans ma tête chaque année avant Pâques et je me souviens de ma maman cachant toute trace de viande et notamment le saucisson ! Mes frères et mon père clamant que le saucisson ce n’était pas de la viande. Comment un français peut se passer un jour de saucisson ! Au delà de la religion elle même, je me rends compte souvent combien la culture catholique est imprégnée dans l’éducation française.

D’ailleurs chez ma maman, le vendredi c’est le jour où l’on mange du poisson.

“Don’t eat meat today, it’s Good Friday!” my mom used to tell us when we were little. The phrase still echoes in my head today, and I remember her hiding any trace of meat, especially le saucisson! My brothers and my father would insist that saucisson wasn’t meat. How can a French person go a day without saucisson! Beyond religion itself, living far from France, I often realize how deeply Catholic culture is woven into French upbringing.

And by the way, at my mom’s house, Friday is still fish day.
