Sensory processing challenges are relatively common among adolescents and adults with Down syndrome. They can be related to one or more of our 8 senses - touch, sight, sound, taste, smell, vestibular, proprioceptive, and/or interoceptive.
Some examples include:
➡ Dislike of certain fabrics or clothing items
➡ Sensitivity to loud sounds, visual stimuli, or strong scents
➡ Trouble with recognizing feelings of thirst or satiation (feeling full)
➡ Difficulty with regulating force (e.g., applying too much or not enough pressure when completing a task)
When the sensory system is not regulated, a person can have difficulty managing their behavior and actions, completing tasks, and interacting with others. Treatment is highly individualized and can range from using weighted objects to doing push-ups to wearing headphones in noisy environments. The goal is to help a person function more smoothly.
Katie Frank, PhD, OTR/L, occupational therapist at the Adult Down Syndrome Center, provides more information about sensory processing challenges in people with Down syndrome in the article linked below.

We spend a massive amount of energy lecturing our children about how they should behave, but the reality is they don’t learn maturity through our speeches. They learn how to communicate, how to apologise, and how to own their actions simply by watching how the adults in charge handle the hard moments.
Our kids are constantly reading the room when things go wrong under our roof. This isn't about maintaining a flawless, robotic performance every single day. It is just about being committed to the work.
Imagine sending a child out into the world who knows how to say, "I was wrong, and I'll do better," without shrinking.
They learn that accountability isn't a punishment — it is simply how a person grows.
When we drop the need to be right all the time and choose to live these truths out in the open, the entire atmosphere of the house changes. We stop hiding behind the title of being the parent, and we become the living proof of the exact people we hope they choose to become. ❤️
