Finish this sentence:
“The hardest part of reading homework at our house is ______.”
Is it getting started?
Staying focused?
Sounding out words without frustration?
Remembering what was just read?
Feeling tired before the book even opens?
We know every family’s reading journey looks different. For some children, reading homework is quick and easy. For others, it can feel like a daily battle filled with big emotions, guessing, avoidance, or tears.
If reading feels hard at your house, you are not alone.
Your answer might help another parent feel less alone, and it may also help us share tips that speak to the real challenges families are facing.

This message from a parent stopped us in our tracks.
Reading progress is about so much more than words on a page.
It is the moment a child reads with more accuracy and fluency.
It is the confidence that starts to come back.
It is the self-esteem that begins to heal.
It is a parent hearing their child read and realizing, “This feels different.”
One year can make such a difference when a child receives the right kind of support, consistent instruction, and encouragement that meets them where they are.
We are so grateful to be part of these stories.

✨ Tricky Word Tip: chief vs. chef ✨
One of our students used to mix up chef and chief when reading and spelling.
To help this football-loving student remember the difference, we used a classic commercial where someone paints the end zone for the Chiefs… but accidentally spells it Chefs.
That connection stuck!
When students have a memory hook that feels meaningful to them, tricky words become a little less tricky.

📚✨ Make summer reading feel like a game!
Our "My Reading Bingo" challenge is a fun, low-pressure way to keep kids reading while giving them lots of choice.
For kids with dyslexia or reading challenges, choice and confidence matter. Reading does not have to look one way to “count.” Audiobooks count. Graphic novels count. Reading together counts. Rereading counts. Short, happy reading moments count.

Dyslexia is often misunderstood—but accurate information can make a huge difference for families. 💙
Dyslexia is not about laziness, low intelligence, or “just seeing letters backwards.” It is a language-based learning difference that can make reading, spelling, and decoding words feel much harder than they should.
The good news? With direct, explicit, systematic instruction—and the right support—students with dyslexia can grow in both skill and confidence.
If your child is struggling with reading or spelling, you are not alone. Early support can help turn frustration into progress.

✨ Easy At-Home Reading Activity ✨
One of our favorite warm-up activities is simple, quick, and only needs index cards!
Write a sentence with one word on each index card. Then mix up the cards and have your child put the sentence back in order.
For example:
The | dog | ran | fast.
Because | it's | raining, | we're | staying | inside.
Mix them up, then let your child rebuild the sentence.
This activity helps practice:
📖 Reading each word carefully
🧠 Sentence structure
🔤 Word order
👀 Tracking from left to right
✏️ Capital letters and punctuation
💬 Making sure a sentence “sounds right”
You can make it easier with short sentences or more challenging by adding longer sentences, adjectives, or punctuation cards.
Small activities like this build big reading skills! 💙
