TN charters scored a major legislative victory in Tennessee with Governor Bill Lee signing House Bill 2177 into law on May 19, 2026. Sponsored by Rep. William Slater, the legislation was introduced with guidance from FCS to create a more efficient renewal process for high-performing charter schools.

Previously, high-performing charter schools were required to complete lengthy and costly renewal processes despite strong academic and financial track records. The new law streamlines the process, reducing unnecessary administrative burdens and costs for both schools and authorizers while maintaining accountability.

FCS is grateful to Rep. Slater and the lawmakers who supported this important legislation. We also thank the Tennessee Charter School Center for its leadership and advocacy in the State House and for its continued commitment to advancing high-quality public charter schools across Tennessee.
