On May 18th, 2024, the 2023-24 LCATS cohort proposed, designed, and integrated scientific payloads to send to the edge of space aboard two helium-filled weather balloons. Important data was collected and analyzed, and Astroport Space Technologies Planetary Geologist Dr. Donald Hooper worked with the cohort to present their findings in the AGU 2024 Online Poster Sessions. The payloads included tracking electronics, cameras, radiation detection sensors, and a CanSat (miniature satellite) for temperature, pressure, altitude, and humidity. Flight objectives included performing basic radiation monitoring for student understanding. Detectors on the balloons measured the exposure to radiation throughout the flight and demonstrated the change in the radiation environment at various altitudes. 3...2...1...... Liftoff! The LCATS 2024-25 Cohorts have launched! Now, the LCATS NASA Junior Consultants will spend their year learning about lunar robotics, lunar site preparation, lunar lava tube exploration and mapping, and beneficial sensors for keeping humans alive in the harsh lunar environment.

Stay tuned to see the innovative designs and solutions proposed by the LCATS students, and join us at the end of the year for their High Altitude Balloon Launch and Robotics Showcase.
