Hello fellow saxophone mouthpiece enthusiasts! Getting a little tired of the same droll discussions regarding saxophone mouthpieces has prompted a didactic stream of consciousness as follows in hopes to elevate the game some (for those that still like to read!):
In a marketplace being flooded with cheap saxophone mouthpieces of every kind, make and color, how is any one brand distinguishable from another? What is most important, how it looks? How it feels? How it sounds to you? Who makes it? Who sells it? The background and experience of the maker? Who plays it? The background and experience of the player? Do you want a “dark sound”? What is a dark sound? Do you want a “free blowing” experience? What is a free blowing experience? What is resistance? Is resistance good? Should more resistance be in the reed or in the mouthpiece? What kind of sound results from being able to handle more resistance versus less resistance? What does a longer versus shorter mouthpiece chamber cause, when all other design aspects remain fixed? How do changes in mass over varying parts of the mouthpiece (beak, body, shank) affect qualities of sound and response? How do wider versus narrower tip rails affect the sound and playing experience? How does the length of the mouthpiece affect sound and response? How do changes in the width of the window and at what part of the window affect sound and response? How do changes in the ramp on the underside of the base of the table that leads to the shank affect sound and response? Do you prefer a flat table? Or do you like a concavity in the table? What part of the table should the concavity be? How does the concavity in different parts of the table affect sound and response? Do you want the concavity to carry into the siderails? What does a convex table do? How does the shape of the chamber affect sound and response? Square versus round versus church window, versus A frame, versus oval, versus… What is a focused sound? What is an edgy sound? Is a bright sound bad? Can a bright sound be brilliant? Can a bright sound be a full sound? Does a bright sound have body? What gives a sound more “body”. Can a mouthpiece do everything, blend, stand out, allow an artist to make a sound that is their own, vastly different from another artist on the same mouthpiece? Or does the mouthpiece result in a more generic sound irregardless of the player? Does the mouthpiece keep the core focus of the sound or integrity of sound at all dynamics? What do straight sidewalls in the chamber do? What do concave sidewalls do? What does a high floor do in the chamber, what does a low floor do? Where should the baffle be? What kind of baffle does what to the sound and playability? Is all rod rubber the same? Are all composites the same? Are all metals the same? What kind of alloy blend do you like as goes sound and response? What gives a mouthpiece mystique? Is it branding or something else? Does the name of a mouthpiece matter? Does it matter what country the mouthpiece is made in? Does…..
