History of the Texas Mosquito Control Association:
The first 25 years (1956-1981)

The history of the Texas Mosquito Control Association (TMCA) is very much intertwined with that of the first few mosquito control districts established in Texas during the early 1950’s. Suffice to say for purposes of this historical summary, that, if the districts and their programs had not come into existence in

As we continue with let’s talk about the myth of releasing the dragonflies!

Why can’t we just let nature handle the mosquitoes? Most people don’t know this, but both mosquitoes and dragonflies start their lives in water.

Let’s compare Florida’s common Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly (a mosquito predator) vs. the Southern House mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus).

Dragonfly mom (giving her the advantage):
Lays ~1,000 eggs in her lifetime
Kids take ~ 3 months in water (minimum)
~5% survive to adulthood which gives us 25 new dragonfly moms.

Mosquito mom (playing it conservative):
Lays ~450 eggs (3 small batches)
Kids take ~2 weeks in water
~3% survive ➡️ which gives us 7 new mosquito moms.

After just one year (same rules, real math):
Dragonflies
1 ➡️ 25 ➡️ 625 ➡️ 15,625 ➡️ 390,625 dragonfly moms

Mosquitoes
1 ➡️ 7 ➡️ 49 ➡️ 343 … 9,387,480,337,647,754,305,649 new mosquito moms

Even after giving the dragonfly all the advantages biology and nature can give, the mosquito still outpaces the dragonfly by a ratio of more than 24 quadrillion to 1.

This doesn’t mean dragonflies aren’t important. They eat mosquitoes and are a valuable part of healthy ecosystems. But it does demonstrate why natural predators alone cannot keep pace with mosquito populations. Mosquitoes simply reproduce too quickly.

WCCHD Urges Residents to Fight the Bite After First West Nile Virus-Positive Mosquito Trap Detected in Williamson County Amid National Mosquito Control Awareness Week

As Williamson County enters peak mosquito season, WCCHD is reminding residents to take precautions after the County's first mosquitoes of the season tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) from a trap near Geneva Park in Georgetown. While no human cases have been reported in Williamson County this year, the positive mosquito sample serves as an important reminder that WNV is present in the community and that prevention measures are critical.
