🍦 One of my favorite traditions is meeting with students after their first year of college to hear how they’re *really* doing. I recently caught up with Steven after his freshman year at university, and as always, yogurt + conversation = the best combo.

😊 It’s incredibly meaningful to see students reflect on how much they’ve grown academically, socially, and personally in just one year.

πŸ“š Steven’s biggest piece of advice: learn time management early. College gives students a lot of freedom, and figuring out how to balance academics, social life, sleep, and responsibilities is a skill.

πŸ‘₯ He also encouraged students to make friends across different groups and communities instead of staying in one bubble. Some of his best experiences came from unexpected friendships.

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ And finally, he emphasized the importance of movement and healthy habits. Whether it’s walking to class, going to the gym, or getting outside, staying active helped him stay motivated and feel more balanced.

✨ I love hearing these reflections from former students. It’s a reminder that college is about so much more than admissions decisions; it’s about growth.

πŸŽ‰ Grateful for the chance to learn from so many thoughtful college admissions leaders this week at the conference in Baltimore. I am even more excited to bring that insight back to the families I work with every day.

πŸŽ™οΈAfter conversations with admissions representatives, a few themes came up again and again.

✨ Top 3 Takeaways for Families Navigating College Admissions:

1️⃣ Lower the temperature
The college process can feel overwhelming, but students do their best work when they feel supported not pressured.

2️⃣ Apply authentically
Colleges want to understand who students genuinely are, not who they think they’re supposed to be.

3️⃣ Be intentional with coursework
Rigor is important, but so is balance. Thoughtful course selection that aligns with a student’s interests, goals, and well-being stands out.

Thank you to:

πŸŽ“ So thankful to the admissions teams and colleagues who continue to make this process more human-centered and student-focused.

After conversations with admissions representatives from schools including Amherst College, Carnegie Mellon University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Pennsylvania, and many others, a few themes came up again and again:

πŸ“ College Tour Season is Here β€” But Are You Asking the Right Questions?

πŸ‘€ Most families walk away from campus tours knowing the dining hall hours and dorm square footage. But the students who find their best fit school? They come prepared with questions that actually matter β€” to them.

πŸ”‘ Here's the secret: great questions start with self-awareness.

✏️ Before you set foot on campus, ask yourself:
β†’ What do I need to thrive academically?
β†’ What kind of community do I want to belong to?
β†’ What are my fears about college β€” and what would ease them?

Then turn those answers into questions:
πŸ’¬ "What does academic support look like for students who struggle in their first semester?"
πŸ’¬ "How easy is it to switch majors β€” and what does that process actually look like?"
πŸ’¬ "Where do students hang out on a random Tuesday night?"
πŸ’¬ "What's something you wish you knew before enrolling here?"

See the difference? These aren't Google-able. They reveal the real culture of a campus.

πŸ’‘ The best tour guide is the one you surprise with a question they have to actually think about.

Drop your best college tour question in the comments πŸ‘‡ and help other families think bigger.
