As we get closer to the end of June, we want to acknowledge everyone in the LGBTQ+ community, including those who have yet to come out, those who may not have a support system, and those who are using their voice to stand up for the entire community.

Today is Juneteenth, otherwise known as Freedom Day.

As the ongoing , we’re continuing to choose hope as a vehicle for celebration and liberation. This Juneteenth, find ways to create change, educate, and inform, whether you’re supporting a local event, taking time to spread educational resources, or organizing a peaceful march, no contribution is too small. In a world of chaos, fueling that action through collective hope can bring communities together and create impactful change.

Did You Know?

Standing proudly in the lobby of Antioch University Seattle, Miss Coco is a glowing fiberglass pig with a storied past. She was originally part of the 2001 “Pigs on Parade”, a public art fundraiser organized by the Pike Place Market Foundation. At the time, she bore the name “The Pig of the Future.”

After the parade, one of the 170 decorated pigs found a permanent home at Antioch. In an alumni naming contest, “Miss Coco” was chosen—an acronym for Commitment to Community. Her presence reflects Antioch’s values of collective engagement, community connection, and a belief that art can be a meaningful bridge between a university and its neighbors.

Dr. BJ Bullert is Professor Emerita at Antioch University Seattle and a Seattle-based filmmaker. On Monday, June 22, Town Hall is screening her newest documentary, UNRECOGNIZED The Duwamish Tribe. To purchase tickets, please visit https://townhallseattle.org/event/unrecognized/

Happy Pride Month!

We’re putting emphasis on the powerful act of existing. Whether you’re a supportive ally, you’re out to the world, or you’re expressing yourself internally, your presence has power. Joy in itself is a radical act.

In our present world of oppressive legislature, discrimination, intersecting systemic issues, and harmful narratives against the LGBTQ+, community is absolutely vital in the continued journey of liberation and equality for all. This means not only speaking out against hatred and ignorance, but also taking space to celebrate q***r joy, peaceful moments, and strides towards progress.

: Internet Addiction and the Relationship to Self and Interpersonal Functioning Within the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD): Implications for Psychosocial Development, a dissertation published by Lori Woehler, a 2021 PsyD graduate, explores the relationship between interconnected mobile devices, applications, and social media, internet addiction, and the affects on interpersonal functioning.

The dissertation’s abstract: “Internet addictive use inclusive of inextricably interconnected mobile devices, applications, and social media predicts diminished Self and Interpersonal functioning. Internet addiction research is burdened by conflicting theoretical views, lack of standardized definitions and criteria, and the use of assessment measures adapted from those used for substance use disorders.

Alternative and dimensional diagnostic models for internet addiction through a psychosocial developmental lens might further understanding of Internet addiction and reduce challenges which impact the ability to advance research and achieve clinically useful, culturally informed, and evidence-based practices for the assessment and treatment of Internet addiction.”
